      Hey -

Just found your message about your battery not staying charged. Sorry I'm just getting back to you.

The VFR (as well as most bikes) relies upon a fixed magnetic stator within the flywheel to generate the charging electricity. This is on the left side of the bike, under the side cover. The stator has three yellow wires coming from it, leading through the Vee of the motor and to a connector on the right side of the bike. From this connector, the three wires go to the regulator/rectifier (the dreaded R/R). Most of the time, charging issues such as yours can be blamed on faulty/corroded wiring, or a dead/dying R/R.
Check both according to the factory manual and a multimeter. If the wires or connectors show any signs of burning, you have your culprit. Get a VFRness to replace this burned up section. I don;t remember off the top of my head where they are obtained, but a search here should find it rather quickly. A search for "R/R" will also be very good for you to do.
