I am sure that there will be someone to help me espcially since I am more than likely going to the NC mountians and there seems to be quiet a few mountia riders from that area on here. Once I get word from my boss which weeks are open for vaction this year i wil be making plans. I have never been able to ride there and it would be a great way to see them.

The fix I've heard the most about is a kit to increase oil flow to the cams...

I hear that if you keep the RPM's below 9.000rpms and always make sure you aren't low on oil and keep up on your oil changes that'll help.

I've put 3K miles part city, part hiway on my 2nd gen since I restored it, it's run flawless. If everything is in good shape I wouldn't worry.

I don't think that I have too much to worry about since I have had a bike I have kept the maintance up and I normally dont ride it too hard. So I am pretty confindent in my bike. My only real concern is that I don't have a clue as to what was done to it or how hard it has been ridden before i got. I do know that it has had several owners.

i do all my work om my 84vf700f,and i would trust it on any ride against any other newer bike. like they have said "any bike can break down",when it does ,fix it !! don't just slap a patch on it !!!! fix it right, the difference between a great job and a half ass job is about 5 min and $5...i have not done the oil mod yet ,but will soon..but i do not rev real high and do not hold high speeds for looong periods of time...RIDE IT....!!!you go to blue ridge let me know ,may be interested..

Can anyone tell me if you can tell if the cam oiling kit is installed on the bike? The first I have heard of it is in this forum. Also do you know where to get the kit from?

I accftually had the same concerns with mine...(gen2) when I got it. I pulled the carbs and replaced them tires of course.and since maintanence was unknown I had the valves checked..they were a Little out (intakes) and a hair tight(exhaust) but not out of spec.TOE put them closer to spec and I am more confident in the bikes ability to keep me safe...now to tighten the axle nuts..........

last year I've done 550km in one day from Milan through swiss alps with my RC24II....so confortable, wonderful to ride...above 2400mt too...
and I've done several 300kms+ sunday trips...only 1 time it let me down...see below...

remember only 2 things you should check....the regulator rectifier (it is a bitch...mine charged battery badly and only over 4000rpm...it let me down 100km from home..., and the starting clutch...if when you press starter you hear some strange noises....change it immediately!

    2nd IBA saddlessore last fall

Late on the response here, but, I did my second 1000 mi. in 24hrs. last year on my First Gen. Modesto, Ca. to Cedar City, Ut. the first day was 1038 miles. Rolled over 35k that first day of our 2500 mile trip. Day 2 into Zion N.P. and down to Vegas, day 3Boulder Dam and up past Death Valley and then home on day 4. No problems with my old girl but I do spend a lot of time with her in the garage. As the others have stated just make sure your bike is in good mech. shape (we really should do this no matter how long the rides we take are) and ride!! [IMG][IMG][IMG]

The cam issues were with the first generation bikes, '85 and earlier. If yours is a second gen '86 it shouldn't be a concern.

I put a total of 85K on my '83 VF750F, including a 4000 mile loop around the western US. Even though I was often warned, I never had a problem with the cam chain tensioners or hard facing on the cams. I finally gave it to a friend who said he'd give it a good home. It probably has 90K+ on it now. Great bike.

if you have good tires fresh oil new plugs clean airfilter good brakes chain etc..if bike is running fine now a cruise down the highway is the best thing for them, in town stop and go getting them hot is the worst besides flat out racing it...nobody ever knows when their bike or car will break we just ride or drive them until they do..good luck and carry a cell phone in case no worries..
