I am thinking about getting some GIVI soft luggage, and am worried about melting them on the mufflers. I have seen some brackets that have been built, but my question is this... Has anyone seen, tried, or known someone who tried to attach heat shield material to the back of the bags to keep them from melting? If so did the material they used stop enough heat transfer to keep from melting the bags? I have found some cuttable adhesive backed heat shield material that is plyable and is rated for temps up to 1750F for a reasonable price, but have no idea how much heat actually transfers through.

Are you stainless steel heat shields still on the bike. If so, you should not have an issue. I rode about 3400 miles round trip twice with my soft Cortech and they didn't even come close to being an issue.

I rode down to Deals Gap and back with a set of motopak softbags on with no extra shielding and they performed great with no hear damage.

are you running stock or aftermarket mufflers? I know with my pipes, I can put my hands on the exterior of them after a long ride an not scorch them, so if my hands are ok, soft bags will be too.

Running stock mufflers. I have just heard horror stories about them sitting on the exhaust and melting on long rides. I am about to make a 1600 mile trip from Houston through the Ozarks and back and just don't wanna be that guy who has it happen to him.

You should be fine so long as the heat shields are in place. Just make sure the bags and their straps stay clear of the inner pipes where the heat is. There should be sufficient air movement between the pipes and the heat shield to keep the shield cool enough to prevent burning or melting of the bags.
