Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I start the bike and it idles with the choke on. If I close the choke, it dies or, as soon as I add throttle, it dies. Clutch is fine. Granted, I haven't started it in months and I'm wondering if my suspicions are valid.

    Thanks for your input.

Your idle circuts are "gummed". Up. If your suspicions are that you need to clean your carbs......you are correct.
Pull them off ( leave the big silver thing on them). Pull your jets , and give it a good once over with some carb cleaner.... there is a carb cleaning thrread here I'll link to it later or you can do a search for it. The author is TOECUTTER , even though it is for a earlier year bike the same principles apply...

    Good luck

Very likely you could have AVOIDED the problem if you stored it properly: after riding, turn petcock to OFF, and run engine for up to a minute until it runs out of fuel, then open choke fully and restart again till it conks out, then drain the carb float bowls by means of the screws. Hit the starter button again for a few seconds to suck the last fuel out of the jets and passages.

This proceedure usually eliminates the need for carb cleaning after storage.

Sorry Squirrley, but there is no petcock to turn off on the 4th gens. You have to electrically disconnect the fuel pump and clamp off the fuel line.

Not sure if it hurts the pump but did shut off the petcock once and ran it out of fuel (for winter storage) but did not like the sound the fuel pump made when there was no fuel in it...

    That's right !!

It's best to just pull the fuel pump fuse or disconnect the plug.

I've been consulting with my mechanic and he says since they started putting ethanol in gas, it contains more alcohol which makes the carbs have a greater propensity to gum up. So, basically, you have to ride it! How awful is that! Any thoughts?

    Later.

When the pilot jets get plugged it is a pipe dream that they will clear and it will just anger you to try Seafoam or rape it in an effort to clear it oot. Just pluck them off and clean them. Gen 4 is a two beer job. Really easy if not the easiest of all the gen's.

its really that simple... undo the brackets that hold the carbs together be careful of the synch springs they are small pull apart gently and don't move any of your mixture screws and you should be alright...
