Looking at purchasing a VFR (or Triupmh Sprint or Ducati ST2). The misses has been going on rides with me and is not happy on the back of a CBR... Still wanting something sporty though, so was looking at a VFR, then I could throw some luggage on and a backrest for longer rides when she is gonna join me.

Anyways, dont have a ton of money to spend, and found a 99 VFR800 for $2,000 but it has 65k miles on it. How long do these motors go? I have done a ton of rebuilds so that doesnt worry me, but does anybody know what piston/rings/gaskets cost to do a rebuild?

I would be more concerned about the maintenance than the mileage. There is a guy over in the UK that put 400k miles (not km) on his VFR before he swapped the motor and put another 400k on it.

I don't think you would need to rebuild a VFR with just that many miles on it. If you are worried about it, after you buy it do a compression test. Then you most likely will no longer be worried.

I met a guy that had 160k miles on a 99 VFR. The paint was a bit faded. The engine sounded really good. <shrug>

Cool, that is awesome. The guy is the 3rd owner and has only put 2,000 miles on it, but has all the service records from the previous 2 owners, so basically from the time it left the dealer... Probably going to go look at it tomorrow evening.

Is $2000 a fair price for one with that many miles?

If it looks decent and sounds good I would buy it on the spot. I paid $3800 for my 98 two years ago. I would say I overpaid... still, it's not a lot of money for a great street bike.

Just in case you don't know, the whining you hear while it is running is the gear driven cams and that is normal.

Here is a link to my 98.

Yeah, jump on it if it is in decent shape. Great price. Has it been down that you can tell?

Going to go look at/test drive it tomorrow. Its about 1.5 hours away from me. It has been painted, and the owner said the prior owner had made it into a street fighter so he put it back to original and painted it, but not sure if hes lying about that and it had been crashed or not. Has a clear title though. I will look at the frame/pegs/engine cases to see if there is any obvious signs of being layed down.

Hers what the FSM says on the cylinders. An aluminum P/M (powder metal) composite sleeve is used in place of a conventional cast iron sleeve. It is composed of a mixture of powdered argil (alloy of silicone, iron, copper, and magnesium), aluminum oxide and graphite (semicrystalline caron). The sleeve is prodeuced by a hot extrusion process, and cast into the cylinder block as with a conventional type of sleeve. The adoption of this aluminum P/M composite sleeve contributes to lower engine weight, along with the other innovations, and enhances cooling efficiency around the engine (by lowering temperature through enhanced heat radiation efficiency), enabling a higher compression ratio. If the temp is managed correctly, the sleeves can be rebored in the same manner as conventional sleeves. During crankshaft and piston assembly and disassembly, make sure that the big end of the connecting rod does not contact or damage the inside surface of the sleeve. Finger typed with Droid X. This tested my patience.

If you have the VIN check it out via the NADA site. My question would be how many owners? How many miles really, A new paint job? A dealer bike?

IMO keep looking, this one sounds like a beater.

I skipped past the streetfighter part. I stay clear of those. I know it's not always squids on them and could just be that he didn't have the money to buy new plastics, but I'm always cautious with those.

yep it keeps on going.....but l wish my electrics would  l just recieved my new regulater of ricks, its the new 50amp mossfet type, nice looking unit, a bit smaller in size than the original ones.....pitty l didn't do my checks before ordering it, because it was my stator that was the problem, so l'v just ordered one of those from ricks aswell, so the tally now is 3 regulaters and 2 staters

funny, people dont seem to realize, ANY motorcycle, as long as it recieves good care, absolutely will last just as long as a car. I've heard of one or two Harleys, and multiple Kawi Concourses, an 01 ZX9R, and an F4i hitting 100-190k miles, and someone who did 400k on an old BMW R90.

proper care and good maintenance are crucial. most bikes dont ever get the chance to even hit 30k because some squid wrecks em and destroys em.

+1 to that, l'v only ever used the honda mineral oil GN4 with 5000k changes which works out every 3 mths roughly, but just about everything else as per the recomended service intervals and never had a problem
