Sorry for the stupid question.I understand the chain slack for Gen 6 is approximately 1 inch.
I have inconsistent reading when I took difference reference point between the swingarm and the drive chain.

Where should i take the measurement from?Green or red line?

Chain slack is measured at the mid length of your chain, i.e. halfway between the sprockets. The slack is the total up and down movement. My advice is to err on the loose side, as a too-tight chain wears itself and sprockets faster. Many chains develop a tight spot so if you have that, rotate the wheel until the lower chain run is at it's tightest and set the tension in that position.

If you feel a series tight-then-loose spots or your chain and sprockets are more than about 20,000 miles old, you need all new parts. You'd need to spend at least $160-$180 for a quality setup.

As cad says ^^ find the tightest spot, and set tension correctly at that place. :sneakiness:

And don't forget, VFRs prefer it slightly loose.

    Hi
my 2003 model's chain is a tad on the tight side my Turkish mechanic thought it would stttretttchhhhhhhhhh, but 5000 ks later still tight, do I tell him to slacken it off? Should be an inch slack midway between the two sprockets about 2.5 cm right?

Yes tell him to go slack off.

Right the spec is something like .8 - 1.2" and it likes it nearer that loose end of the spec.

Totally agree with this. You are subjecting your chain and sprockets to far too much strain and pressure when it is too tight. Keep in mind, soon as you sit on the bike and compress the suspension, the chain does tighten slightly anyways. Also. Chains don't stretch. Links and sprockets wear. I think I would also be seeking out a mechanic who knows a little more about bikes.

1.5 inch, too tight will wear chain faster, also you can tell if too tight by riding it or too loose. The wolf knows best on the theory of everything.

Yeah, you guys confirmed my worst fears, apparently the excuse he gave initally was that with an extra link it was too loose and he made I ride it for a while suggestion, but after 5ks it was still the same, so he has finally relented and is going to fit an extra link, if I am not satisfied with that, well just gonna have to take my custom elsewhere,he knows his way around a bike, even races a few but sometimes I think a bit of commonsense is in short supply. Turks are like that! Spoke
to him last night and now the story has changed, when the chain with the sprockets were presented to him by myself coz I bought it from the main Honda dealer, he said,,,, wait for it,the chain was barely long enough to fit, so instead of making a phone call tot he dealer he made it fit,, too tight,, that was in September 2015. Needless to say when I get it back from him,,,,,,,,,waiting,,,,,,,,, waiting,,,,,, plonker,,,, twat,,,,,, waster,,,,waiting,,,,,,shit head,it will be for the last time!

I can't understand how you can get an accurate measurement on chain tension. Even on the tight end of the spec, the chain touches the swingarm when pushed up. So between that and pushing down on the chain to get a slack measurement, how do you know what the real measurement is when you can't get the full range due to hitting the swingarm? Am I making any sense?

Another thing to remember: The recommended chain slack is a protective measure. If the chain is too tight it can put stress on the bike's gearbox bearings, especially on the output shaft bearing (the one that is right behind the counter sprocket).

    Update:

Well spoke to my Turkish mechanic, it gets worse, to cut to the chase, he took the chain off and went a got another link to slack off the chain, but he ordered what he thought would be the right part without checking it first, like taking the chain to the local Honda dealer and saying something intelligent like "got a link or two to fit this"? No, he just did his own thing and guess what?? The part he ordered doesn't fit, so instead of taking it back sans chain he decides to try and make it fit into the end of the chain,,,, how you may ask will he get a small piece of highly engineered hardened steel to fit into a small space that it was not meant to?? Give up,, yeah, I would never have guessed the answer,, with an angle grinder of course!!!!! Now what that will do to the integrty of the chain should he ever get it to fit god alone knows! Needless to say, when my machine, the poor sweet thing is returned to me, it will be taken somewhere else to have the job done as it should be, instead of butchered and bodgered by an idiot, no doubt he will present me with a bill for the work, sorry damage he has done!
