My name is Jordan Elkins. I live in northern California and I have been the proud owner of a 1987 VFR 700. I bought it in San Diego, CA from the original owner in 2012. She is the white model with the blue seat and was affectionately nicknamed "The Cocaine Stallion" for her very "Miami Vice-ish" look... The bike was always garage kept and flawless.

Unfortunately while I was riding it, a fire started under the seat and I was able to get off a little warm but uninjured. Not sure what little electrical gremlin I got but something shorted out I think. The bike was so perfect and I love it so much that I got really depressed over it. I put it in the garage and haven't really touched it since and that has been close to 2 years now. However one of my new years resolutions is to get that bike restored and running again as well as a few other garage projects including my '63 Thunderbird Landau.

I am a 9 year Navy veteran and currently work as an operator in a Chemical plant. I am an avid motorcyclist and have 4 bikes in the garage. (VFR700, '78 GL1000, '64 Yamaha Y1T, and a '16 Triumph Bobber).

    Welcome to the forum!
We would love to see some pictures of your bike, even if it is damaged.
Your electric problem may be the regulator / rectifier.
As far as you know, is it the original R/R?
This post - http://vfrworld.com/threads/how-to-fix-common-regulator-stator-failures.39277/ - has proven to be very helpful.
The 9th reply is "the drill".
If you can get it running you can complete "the drill ".
If the R/R needs to be replaced, buy the recomend replacement from Roadstercycle.com, or find a used one off of some of the Yamaha R1's.
Roadstercycle also has a video showing how to test the R/R off the bike.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you! I'm sure it is the original. The bike is totally stock as far as I know except for the grips. I haven't done a thorough investigation. I'm about to do that this week. here are some pics...
