Hey people, been joined up for about a week. Recently got a 5th gen with 108k miles, was a trade in at the Honda shop I work at. Really enjoyed "The Drill" but didn't help me find my low charging issue. Looking forward to the discussions I'll have with everyone. Thanks

Welcome to The World Ragacious! Ah, the infamous Drill! Many a VFR member has dealt with it, so welcome to that club too.

A welcome to Ragacious from another 5th gen owner. What is it you do at the "shop"?

This is not the first time I've heard of a Honda Service tech who chose to own a VFR. A well designed engine and good ergos topped of with precise fit and finish make it a great choice. Not to mention friendly insurance rates.

Does your Viffer have a stock R/R? Mine "passed" the Drill also, except for the fact that the R/R would only allow a charge of 13.2 Volts max at around 3500 RPM. Higher RPMs would lower the Voltage output. A used R/R from a Yamaha (Mosfet) wired directly to the battery solved all issues for me.

Yeah it still has the stock rr, I actually have a new stock one as well. At idle the bike is charging at 13.7vdc but at 2500rpm and up it drops to 12.7. After going through the drill numerous times, I kinda just decided I'll order a different rr. So do I wire the stator to the new rr by soldering the "legs" or is it better to go with a connector?

You have the classic Honda OEM R/R of death... .dont replace with OEM...
(It would be fine if your willing to run the bike at idle all day. ;))

Check out the vendor - www.roadstercycle.com -- either the FH020aa or SH847aa is fine, the 2nd is larger so mounting is more difficult.
-Wire the R/R direct to the battery per the website instruction.
    - Hard wire the stator wires to the R/R wires via soldering or a double overlap butt connector method. Of course, use Marine heat shrink tubing to seal up .

And for grins one more time. Heres mine..

You will need to drill holes to match in the stock mount plate.

    Cheers

Ok - maybe there was a little confusssion over wahts a pass and wahts a fail in the R/R section of the Drill.. so I updated... Hope this helps everyone.
Essentially the R/R needs to be putting out solid voltage at revs.. If you think about it, we spend our riding time at revs, and with the OEM volts fading into the 12s over time - thats discharging.... then at some point we have to call the tow truck..
