Yep, bought another one. 1986 VFR750F. Odo says 38,xxx. Been sitting for 4 years outside. With title, $500. Did come with seat cowl. Rear taillight cowl not cracked. Right lower nearly perfect. Tank is faded but no dents or dings. Original key.

It does have some damage on the left from a low side, not terrible. It is pretty weathered from sitting outside. Can't get the gas cap open yet, I am continuing to soak the lock. Pretty sure I am going to harvest parts and sell some perhaps. There are many parts I need for my next project. This picture is very flattering. I really bought it for the titled frame.

When I was looking it over prior to purchase I noticed it was a Cali bike. No big deal. Last night I had some time to look at it a little closer. The 750cc engine doesn't have the air ports on the front head. So at some point it got a 49 state 750 engine. Could be cool. I will try to start it off of a aux tank, but I am very certain I will have to clean the carbs. No big deal, I will completely rebuild them, re-install to run and listen, then remove and have them ready for another bike. Later I will remove the valve covers and do an inspection.

Any way, what the fuck am I doing? I have a problem. Just couldn't let this slip away. Too many good parts.

Oh yeah, you've made an investment. $500 !? I'd have bought it, too.
How did you happen upon that deal ?

Looks good from here, except the seat. But 4 years sitting does a bike no good.

Showed up on Craigslist. Took him a couple days to respond, I thought it was gone. He was weird to deal with and didn't seem interested in honoring any kind of first right of refusal. He was originally going to have everyone who responded just show up at the same time, but I was able to make the deal on a weeknight.

Well, the other side is ground off pretty good, but yeah, the right showing is worth a fair portion of the purchase price. The taillight cover has zero cracks too, so that's cool. And the right lower you see is nearly perfect.

Holes in the head are for ventilation, otherwise you'd get too smart, LOL.
Today stumbled across a 1991 VFR750, appearance-wise OK, going for C$800... apparently needs carb work, being sold as a parts bike... it's at a dealer, they say $1600 for the carb work...... um, do I need this?

Shit, it's almost been a year since I got it. Well it's pretty much next, while doing a bunch of other shit on the other bikes. I have "finished" up the 1000s for a while.

The 1994 CBR600F2 forks are completely rebuilt. Euro 41mm VFR lower triple with CBR1000 upper. 1994 VFR handlebars. F2 wheels front and rear, all spacers are done. Gages and upper cowl stay are restored. Brakes front and rear are completely restored and rebuilt. Nitron remote res shock. The carbs are apart on the bench, haven't got around to rebuilding yet (something just keeps going on the lift), but I want to reinstall and run the bike before yanking engine.

Well, I was kinda joking because there are really some other things non-bike I have to get done, like total re-org of the shop... more than one hobby. This thing will cost me an 8 hour drive one way, an overnighter and I'm not really totally into an older VFR unless totally worth it. I don't know if could break even once done if I paid myself $20/hr..... if it was next door, it would be much harder to resist.

8 hour drive? Prob not worth it then. $1600 quote for carb work is laughable. But if the bodywork is decent and doesn't need every other maintenance item, a tidy profit is very doable if you have any market in your area. Here in the NW, no problem. I tend to look at my labor time in situations like that as a time investment. Work on it occasionally, listening to music, or watching some racing, and sipping a beer. I know that my time is worth something, but it's not like I'm on my back, in the driveway, while it's raining, working on a car.

I'm on the west side of Toronto and would have to almost go to Montreal to look at it, which I don't count, I'd have the cash in my pocket... doubt the dealer will dicker much. Yes the carb refurb is ridiculous, likely calculated at full shop rate of $100/hr plus parts. Don't see many of this vintage for sale much, not seeing it as a stable mate for my 5th Gen or CBF1000. Yeah, I work a lot fer free, that's not really an issue but time and space is. I'm trying to stay down to 2 bikes.

Vintage, out of manufacture, levels of effort to acquire, etc etc, ya....don't ever put that in equation to calculate "worth it"....in absolute dollars, likely never end up on positive side of that vision quest!
