Thank you so much for the fast reply!!! I wonder if that’s the problem. It begins to spin and then sounds like it grinds out and then I come off of the button and do it again. Sometimes it catches for a while and sometimes it doesn’t catch at all

Sounds like the culprit. How many miles?

Yeah... get it apart and see what you need. Might take just the rollers and springs to freshen it up. Sometimes #5 cracks.

When I get it apart I’ll post pictures. :). Now when I pull the starter should I expect oil to come out? Might be a novice question but rather be safe than sorry

Dont have to pull the starter. You should drain the oil before removing the right crankcase cover. If it was on it's sidestand, you might not drip any oil, but I would drain to be safe.

Oh of course. You should be able to see both with the cover removed

unless the bigger parts are cracked, starter clutches are an ez fix, usually needing only a cleanup and maybe 3 new 50-cent springs.

if you lean the bike against something a few degrees to the starboard side you won't need to drain oil to remove clutch cover.

I wonder if that’s what it is. It wipes engage from time to time and I can crank for how ever long I want and then sometimes I get a couple cranks and it grinds out

in about 90% of problems like yours it's the starter clutch, not the starter itself and a well known vf/vfr problem.

I'd agree, sounds like the starter clutch.... rebuilt the one on my old Magna, new rollers made it just like new although the old ones didn't look all that bad.

I can take a video if anyone is willing to listen to it maybe you’ve heard it before and can diagnose it from there. I’m not sure how to add a video on here but I can text it to you.

I'd start with springs and rollers.

Sometimes catches, sometimes kicks out and occasionally sounds like a rock polisher? That is likely the culprit. Seen/heard it on a bunch of customer's bikes.
