Well, blows my theory out the window. Weird.

 

I did look at YSS site, no logic in witch length has adjustment and not, mostly fork lower shocks that are short doesn't have but there is exeptons

 

I wounder if you know how much the 87 shock rise the rear on a 86, at wheel axle.

 

In a very unscientific quick check:

Two 1986, both on sidestands, similar preload settings, from the axle to the same spot on the subframe...

The 10mm difference in shock length resulted in a 1 inch increase.

 

Well search for orginal shock numbers give you 4 different shock's used on the RC24
ML7-003 as ML7-013 for the 1986 750 as 700.
ML7-691 for 1987 750 as 700
ML7-921 for the 1988 as 1989 750

Would be interesting to know what difference between the 87 as 88/89 shock even same length as look....

 

The 88-89 is the same length as 87. Likely is a valving / spring change that resulted in a different part #.

If I remember correctly, visually they look the same 87 to 88.

 

Yes, actually 86 to 89 looks alike I think. I have hade a 87 that stock shock felt almost as soft as a 86 shock, I have test ridden a 89 and its shock didn't feel as soft so yes, probably a spring/valving change

 

The 86 is actually much different looking from 87 on. It has a boot covering the preload collar and a different pre-load adjuster.

 

Well yes, the 86 is slightly different, also the lower spring plate seems different actually

What do you mean by "Sprung" for the 87 camshafts?
My other 86 rear cylinder head exhaust camshaft is not good anymore sadly, so looking into camshafts, a cheap 87 bike would be possible to get (has been down/fallen) so wounder if you could use 87 cams in a 86, aside the one that trigger the sensor (front cylinder head intake), whit out any issues?
