If it's one gear I'd suspect dogs, multiple gears the shift fork bent?? Check the pushrod and bleed it first. Check the clutch plates & then...

That was almost 4 years ago and the finish is about half way between the before and after pics, without any maintenance. Stock heatshield....
For regular cleaning, this. For extra cleaning Simple Green and soft bristle brush. And the Dupont teflon stuff.
