I traded in my 2003 6th gen in Dec 2014 for a slightly used 8th gen and have no regrets, nothing about the 6th gen was better.
Soleniods are just copper coils that close a switch, not sensitive to polarity, check the switch and wiring.
I've been to PT and that helped. I don't plan on stopping riding, I still have my '83 to enjoy, but worried about the effects of aging on riding...

We have it on the 8th gen and I use it all the time to make sure I won't stall it a critical time.

No way to add ABS because of computerization in the ECU. It's nice to have, saved my ass a couple of times, but I lot of guys rather not have it....
