I think mine had about 20 miles on it before I just HAD to see what the V-Tec felt like...WOW!!! To me, It feels like the 4 bbl on an old muscle...

If you hear the "click", switch is good, and (good chance) solonoid bad. If no click, problem would be switch or wiring to/from it.
Sounds like it's running waaay too lean. My money is on a vacuum leak.

I'd check the starter button and the starter solonoid. Do you hear a "click" from under the seat, when you push the starter button when it doesn't...
I had a similar problem on my '83. It turned out to be the plug going to the R/R was fried inside. Replaced the plug, has been just fine ever since.
Is it fixed now??
Why would you keep it on reserve all the time? Could be any of the above suggestions.

I'd check the (-)neg battery cable where it hooks to the frame of the bike. Unhook it and clean it with a wire brush. It sounds like a bad ground...
