Dirty connector would my my first guess. I've certainly had that on other bikes. Check the connectors in that circuit, including the fuse and fuse...

Exhaust leak? Neither my '98 nor my '00 smell at all.
Letting an "expert" touch anything these days just means that you'll have to pay them, then likely do the work properly again anyway!
