very unusual to be that far off. you can try bending with heat or source a new float.
how far off are they ? use the one that sticks up highest from the carb base as reference. don't use heat. what year is the bike ? 4th gen...
the best way to keep the engine running is fresh oil, warm it up b4 riding. and keep the revs away from the top range. redlining it is a quick way...
i've b een on this website for alota years, can't remember any substitute engines put into a vf500.
start saving and looking for a newer bike now ;)

following on from terry's idea................crank for awhile then pull a sparkplug. if it's dry, you're not injecting fuel, and you have a FI...
GRUM will have an answer for you. try unplugging the r/r first to see if smoke stops, and try to find the exact location of the smoke.
grum is the maximum 'lectickal expert, so go by what he says. i say if you have 4 sparks at 4 plug wires, there is nothing wrong with the ecu....
i remember once that i covered a leak hole with aluminum foil and then covered that with the JB and it held up well cuz fuel wasn't touching the JB.

if you get sparks to all 4 plugs the ecu is probably fine.
maybe you could try contacting caswell to find out if they know of a solvent to remove the liner ? whatever it might be it's gonna be nasty so...
