The tank is the same. Just the petcock and it mounting is different. The sheet of aluminum is the heat shield. I was thinking that....

I think it's always recommended to put the stock tire sizes (for the stock wheels) on the bike

^^ Good point. ^^ Pull everything apart and see what it needs first. Even the bushing on my VF500 forks were fine after 58,000kms.
Excessive carbon build-up maybe? I know when I Seafoamed my bike last fall it spat out some stinky exhaust fumes.
Maybe the snap rings? Mine were rusted and when I removed them they became pretty beat up.
