Oh no.......you need to get a meter and start checking a few things, starting with the pick up coils. The sky is the limit as far as possible damage.
Best to just pluck them off and clean them. Here is a thread. DO NOT REMOVE THE MANIFOLD THAT CONNECTS THE CARB'S TOGETHER....
I think your on the correct path, verifying that it is working properly after it is hot would top my list as described.

I am fond of factory friction plates with aftermarket springs for the older bikes. A safe play.

What year? I think I would pull the slave loose to see if it was a hydraulic issue or a mechanical one just for starters. Easy to do.
