If the fuel level is below the petcock it will be reluctant to just flow oot on gen 2, I am guessing gen 1 has similar internal plumbing.

If I were to purchase a 500 inspecting the cams, followers, tensioners, and valve tips would top the list of things I would before riding.
The left side is an issue......not a straight swap. A wiring diagram will be needed. A four beer job and some reading glasses.
Best to be done with it and change it to a third gen or later switch. That design was prone to failure and the later ones will swap oot with no mods.
The bolt is really long and if you get the valve cover off it should have plenty left to grip.
