that's right, anyplace the cam lobe is generally pointing away from the valve is fine, position doesn't need to be exact for setting clearances.
it's easy enough to bump the engine over by rolling in gear or with the starter motor. ****** so there is no real need to remove alternator cover...
you went the cheepo route and got crap, hope you spend bigger for wheel bearings. probably inferior metallurgy and won't last as long as better...
almost sure thAT'S a result of not having a proper drain/vent tube on the battery, fairly common.
better to remove shift lever and put it in a vice to bend, not on the bike.

carb synch has alot of influence at speeds around idle and just a bit above but almost no effect at higher speeds over about 3000-4000 or 1/4...
avoid chinese carb kits...........or anything else from china. kits are mostly unnecessary parts, and as mentioned above, just a simple cleaning...
