what u need 2 know is all in the service manual, ok ? most likely a drain. ..............which can be accessed online.
too many mechanical problems with valve train, and replacement parts very hard to get. the #1 problem bike as reported on this site.
do yourself a favor and forget about any VF500s in your search.
may not be worth saving............. re-boring requires a complete stripdown and a specialist workshop, and new pistons/rings may not be...

^%^ yes! it's good to drain and flush a fuel tank at least every 2 years. OMG, weevee, u got RC30 carbs ????
there are large crossover water tubes within the V, and a gasket (O-ring) there may be at fault. so when's the last time you drained and flushed...
nice try to help........... but the mixture screw o-rings would have little to NO EFFECT on the problem the poster describes, and the choke...

didn't say where you got the replacement, could be for a similar but different bike ?
the stock horn is very good IF IT'S WORKING RIGHT. wonky horns can be fixed back to original amplitude if you know how.
