Is a transparent or opaque color? My 83 sat for 15 years and the oil still looked good, but was changed to synthetic before it was started.
That doesn't sound good, if it looked like a mocha, then some water or coolant got into the oil.

I agree 100%, sampling is for the big boys with huge engines and high labor costs in changing oil.
I occasionally have the same brake light problem with my '83 750, so far all i had to do is turn the key off, on then off again and it goes out....
