A Great VFR Story - The Original '86 VFR750

Shaun D. Nielsen sent me the following email.

I am a long-term fan of the Honda V-4 and until recently owned 2 of these legendary bikes. I sold my '98 800 to travel but still have a special little VFR750R in storage in Australia. A pic of this bike is included below if you would like to add it to your site - it deserves a little explanation though.

The bike is actually a 1986 model (paperwork from Honda confirms this date) which was used as a pre-production prototype for Australian compliance testing. When testing was complete the bike was used by the Australian Honda superbike team and went on to win 4 national titles in the hands of Malcolm Campbell (NR500 development rider), Troy Corser and Anthony Gobert (also raced by Darryl Beattie and Scott Doohan).

The motor was built by the team for the highly controversial 1993 season with the full HRC race kit and extensive modifications, the engine number is 1993RC30.

I bought the bike from the team in mid-1994 after Anthony and then-teammate Kirk McCarthy were given RC45's. The bike was registered by me for use on Australian roads with the only modifications being the fitment of lights, starter and road going bodywork while retaining the full HRC race kit and countless modifications made locally by the race team, who recently ran the 250cc GP team owned by Michael Doohan.

The bike is used mainly on frequent track days and has come within 3 seconds of a local superbike pole time in the hands of a domestic 250cc GP rider after the fitment of slicks alone. Needless to say riding this bike on the road can be a challenge. But then again too much horsepower is never enough!
