i would need to look at a schematic for a honda auto, like a civic...
i think ill just order it and test it out in a pot of boiling water,
just have to hope that the threads are an exact match though.

i am not going to leave it as is. the combination of having the thermostat trying to warm the bike up past 180* and the fan switch trying to cool the bike below 160* before it shuts off is not going to work.
i have a suzuki 170* thermostat and a civic 200* fan switch on the way.
this should be an optimal combination, as long as they fit into their corresponding housings.
i should have this done in a few weeks and i will post up the results.

I think this is a very relevant discussion, as I've often wondered about lowering the temp that the fan kicks in on my 5th gen, which tends to run hot. I just did a quick Google search and I see that Flex-a-Lite and others sell adjustable sensors at a pretty reasonable price. Not sure if they are a bolt in or if an adapter would be needed, but they look to be basically the same thing that we have on our VFRs. They say they are adjustable from 180 to 240, so in theory something like this should do the job. Anybody have any experience with one of these?

i just took a close look at a few defunct thermoswitches in my collection of crapped-out parts off 2 or 3 Honda models including VFR and saw this stamped on the metal portion: "100-> ON"

So Honda wants the fan to start at 212F.........not, as far as i saw, previously mentioned on this long, informative, and sometimes HEATED thread........

sorry about any of the "heat" on my part...
yeah i think that you're right about 212 being the switch on point on some of the previous gens... but on the 6th gens that sounds more like the switch off point. if all else fails, i think that would be a good alternative to the 6th gen switch. do you got a pic or year of the 212 switch?
    thanks

Thats my way of suggesting something really easy to fix the problem that will only take an hour or so to do and only cost about $15.00. The cartoon character above used to have a little quote he used.......

Aw - thats way too ez. And then you have this bastard switch sticking out screaming "c'mon play with me." And everbody would be going - "What's that switch?" I'd say "dont touch it, No! Not thaaat one!"

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stuck in the Super Hawk fan today. Fired it up and it cycled 218F to 205F and back and forth. Seemed to move a good chunk of air. We'll see how it does out on the road....

Now to find that elusive 203F - 208F on switch.

The foghorn Leghorn quote I had in mind was, "if you wants to catch a chicken boy, your goin' about it the wrong way". Poor little chickenhawk.

Just as a point of reference on another bike: After working on my bike this afternoon, I took her for a shake down ride and watched the temp closely. I never got in traffic and it was around 60f here in MI today.

She hovered around 170-175 while riding in clean air. When I got home, I let her idle while I moved my truck and such; she went up to 221 and the fan cut in; slowly, while sitting still, she started to cool. She went down to around 200 (not sure, was walking back from moving truck and the fan was off when I got back). She was starting to climb back up though, she was at 207 and was going up one degree at a time, so I cut her off about 209.

There you go. If I head into some tight traffic during heat this summer (could happen), I'll try to keep an eye on it and report back.

Lower temp fan switch - Honda Motorcycles - FireBlades.org

seems like these rc51 guys are always one step ahead...

looks like they've been using thermostatic fan switches from old school nissans for the past year. the fan activation and deactivation points are approximately 185* and 170*. that doesnt sound too much different than where im at now so hopefully getting that civic switch wasnt a bad idea.

    P.S. vtr1000 fan just arrived:smile:... still waiting on switch...:frown:
