Me too. I use it on the CB-1 when the others are in use.

Well... I put the lowers back on after fixing the drain plug and winterizing... then remembered I have a clutch project to take care of. Lowers back off. I have been getting some random slipping when dialing in full throttle on corner exits. Well shit.

Luckily I hadn't refilled the oil yet. I already put a new clutch in when I buttoned this bike up a couple years ago. Honda went with a stupid diaphragm spring instead of a more typical individual spring set-up. Of course it has been long discontinued and not used on any other Honda. Cool. Thanks.

I bought a low mileage clutch to get access to the spring before hand and perhaps end up with a good spring that measures within service limits. This is the spring out of the new clutch and it does measure good. BUT... doing some searching for alternatives I came across mentions of the Magna clutch spring being compatible. Well, of course long discontinued now. Found mention of the GL1500 Gold Wing spring being successfully used by somebody I recognized and trusted. Still available. You have to reduce the OD to match the VF1000 spring.

    PXL_20241202_031746348.jpg

    Which I have already done.

New spring has more conical lift (and is new and not been cycled for decades) and should work really nice. WHEN successful, I will buy 2 or 3 more for my other VF1000s when they inevitably need it too.

Buy one of these springs and put it in the "VF1000F" box.

After reviewing my records, and actually getting into the clutch, I had not replaced the frictions on this bike. I was in there when I replaced the shift shaft spindle that was damaged when the bike was crashed before I bought it. So... new clutch it will be.

    PXL_20241203_132316010.jpg

I figured-8'd the metals on some thick glass with sandpaper and WD-40 last night already. New frictions will get ordered today after I get an eBay payout. Most of the gasket came off with the cover, which is a rarity for me apparently, so that's good.

This spring measures less than the one that came with the low mileage clutch assembly I bought.

It is still technically in spec, but is only ~.1 mm away from the service limit of 4.2mm

    It's actually a "height".

Ahhhhh... I thought for a second you were saying you found an original one! If you are interested and you want me to modify yours, let me know. Like I posted earlier, the OD needs to be reduced to match the original. It wasn't hard, it just took a while to bring it down slowly and evenly using a big belt sander and bear-tex wheel.

Thank you Cap … I’ll take you up on that offer!
When it comes in I’ll send it to you. Again thank you!
    We will be in touch.
It’s been YEARS since I’ve had the clutch cover off my F. This winter seems like a good time to do so.

Some preventative clutch work is not normally how it happens, you usually wait until you feel some slipping. But it is nice to preemptively freshen a clutch so it's Winter when it's down, not Summer. Especially when you KNOW it's been a long time. Plus, your steel plates appreciate it a lot.

My thoughts exactly… I did a complete clutch service on my CB1100R last month. Cleaned everything up and replaced the fiber plates… buttery smooth.

On subject of clutch work, would it be correct in assuming that worn friction plates will have less engine braking?
