Any ideas what to try? I get it started, hold it at 3 or 4000 RPMs for a few minutes and it sounds fine, but when I let go of the throttle it just slows down and eventually stops within a minute or so. New battery, good gas, cleaned out the carbs a few years ago.

Carbs. Unless you are using no ethanol fuel which makes a big difference in carb cleanliness.

Do you recommend a carb rebuild kit? If so, which one? Or is it enough to take the carbs apart and clean them?

I would be real careful and try and reuse the stock stuff if they look ok. Give everything a good cleaning and pay particular attention to the pilot jets and passages.

idle jets arent clean, probably all thats wrong. if u left gas in carbs during storage (instead of draining bowls) its very likely the idle jets are clogged.
