Been riding my new to me 2014 VFR800 standard for a few weeks now, putting on 3-4 hours and maybe 200 miles on it.

Was riding today and came to a stop at a light and the bike died. Dash shows oil light, check engine light and gear indicator shows "--" and the bike won't restart.

Pulled off the road and tried what i could. Stand up down, kill switch on off, shifting gears, clutch in/out, and no response from the starter. Does not try to crank and lights do not dim.

I'm waiting on a tow now. Any ideas on what could have happened and what I need to check?

Bike has 18000 miles on it and I trust the prior owner took care of it, but history is unknown.

    Does the fuel pump run?
You should be able to hear it

    Try rotating the key

If No Neutral light? And No fuel pump prime? Plus No cranking, and No horn.

    Equals.........
Blown - Start/Horn/Stop Fuse 10amp in the Left fuse Box.

Had you done any recent changes to the front Brake lever or its position by rotating the Master Cylinder clamp position? Can cause a brake switch short to the handlebar blowing the fuse.

Do not hear the fuel pump. All fuse are fine.

I did adjust the front lever position prior to ride. Ride lasted 20 mins before issue. Will look for a short there, but expected to see a blown fuse if that was the issue.

No neutral light, confirmed in neutral.

Disregard, that fuse is blown... showed continuity when tested, but pulled it and it was blown. Guessing there is continuity due to the short. Going to search for that now.

Have a close look at the front brake switch, are any connections touching the master cylinder or frame in any way?

    I suspect brake switch wires...

Disconnected both and one side is showing continuity to ground. Are these switches 12v or grounding switches?

Bike starts and appears normal with brake switch wires disconnected and fuse replaced... now to find the short...

Switch sends 12v to the rear light assy. Does the rear brake switch operate the lights and not blow the fuse?

Closely inspect those front switch terminals are Not touching any frame. May need to also check your rear pedal switch.

OK. Think my testing was problematic... continuity to ground went away with key on... put it back together and fuse is not blowing. I'm guessing it was grounding to the bar when attached.

Does it sound normal to have continuity to ground from red/black wire on brake switch with the key off and not with key on?
