The sub filter on my 97 on inspection was completely destroyed and I'm pretty sure a lot of the filter ended up in my carb assy. I'm the third owner, the bike has 39K miles. I noticed that this seems to be a common problem with the stock filter. Has anyone tried just replacing the whole thing and using a different kind of filter like a K&N crankcase type breather filter?

I have wondered about that myself as I replaced my foam filter this year with an original part ( I actually ordered 2 of them), the filter in the housing was sort of sticky and claggy 'bits' in the housing so I assume it was original, 22,000 miles
