I lived in Wichita for a couple of years. Friendly people there, on the whole. I lived in the base housing for McConnell AFB (southeast corner of the city) during a 2 year assignment. I enjoyed it.

The most striking thing about your trips, AM, is that you are willing and able to be by yourself, and you obviously have a wonderful time that way. A lot of people can't do "alone time" or solitude, it just drives them crazy with with the negative emotion we call loneliness. You must have a good amount of introvert in your personality (as do I). True introverts don't have a problem with being alone, we're just fine with some solitude, in fact we need it and enjoy a certain amount of it in our daily lives (I'm such an introvert that I don't really even experience what people refer to as "loneliness". I had to make up my own word for it, which is "aloneness").

Praise the Lord for Wal*Mart and the people of Wal*Mart when that loneliness kicks in and you need gas and a couple of beefsticks all at the same time.

You need to do the loop around Ouray and Telluride. Head over to Mesa Verde, black canyon at gunnison, then 92 north from route 50 to Hotchkiss, 133 through Redstone.

For the most part, the city is friendly...I'm learning to stay away from the creepers. I don't make much eye contact anymore. I teach in a horrible area. Most of the city is going downhill. But there are still nice areas.

I ride around McConnell often and love attending the airshows there. They are building new base housing. The homes look amazing. You wouldn't know it was base housing if it didn't have the wall around it. The area is still nice and is continuing to be developed. I like riding around there and Spirit (formerly Boeing) to hopefully catch a glimpse of the Dreamlifter in flight. The thing is so huge it looks like it's barely moving in the sky. Looks like a right blimp.

Then fun things like this happen here too:

The plane was supposed to land at McConnell, but instead landed at our dinky Jabara airport 8 miles away.

As for being alone, I get the questions all the time...aren't you scared, what if something happens and you are by yourself, won't you get *gasp* LONELY????

I am an introvert...I always have to feel I need to disclaim that it doesn't mean Emotionally Unstable, EMO, Crazy, Antisocial, ETC...it just means, as you stated, that I am fine with being alone and feel it recharges me after spending time socializing or working during the week.

I like your word "aloneness". Yes, at times like last weekend when I saw the sun set behind Pike's Peak, I wished I could have shared the moment with someone. I've had those feelings before but that doesn't mean I'm desperately lonely.

Also, who else around here will go with me on crazy spontaneous ride your heart out adventures like this? The answer is really: NO ONE

So my only choice is ALONE. Because I refuse to sit on muh duff just because I don't have company.

I take myself to dinner alone, movies alone, I read alone, I play outside alone, I drink alone, I sleep alone...and sometimes I do those things with others. It's very liberating to be able to still have the spirit to do things alone and not be governed by feeling lonely like some people do...and some of those people just sit and pout instead of getting out.

Anyhoo, I will always have fun alone. If someone wants to come along, great!
My fun and happiness is never dependent upon anyone else.
I'm responsible for my joys and I'm lucky that having to be alone at times comes easy for me.

Thank you!! Gunnison to Ouray ad Telluride to Mesa Verde is highly possible!

I have a friend riding the first part of my summer trip with me.
After going up Pike's Peak, we are heading to the Four Corners. We could detour up to Hotchkiss and back down as well.

Thank you for the suggestions...much appreciated as we haven't talked about roads to take yet. :)

If I'm off the interstate, I'm easily doing 100 at times.

You crack me up..actually they're pretty popular for the go fast crowd or the drag chrome crowd, which ever fits. Which gets me thinking if a separate thread for this subject is in order. To answer your question, It's just an item that keeps my inner Hardlly dude alive just in case. Other wise known as a, Doo Rag, aka; Buff. ;)

I've see some at Harley Botiques. They are also used as bibs and napkins by the Harley crowd. The white ones can become colorful in a year or two.

I'll be riding my trusty 5th gen. I haven't made any plans yet but it looks like it runs close to Kansas city maybe I can even try to spend two nights there so you can show me some of the sites and twisty roads in your neck of the woods
