So my spare bike looks like it’s an F,

Discovered the engine is not seized and it turns over ok, so I have a spare Engine that has done on 20k

    Mains are 110 all round
    VD86A

Now I'm starting to get really good at getting these off and back on, so is it worth changing the jets to all 110 to prove the point, cos at 162 the ones in there are 40% bigger

If you feel like the work, the 110 should show the bike was over jetted. The 110 might be small for wide open pulls, but you should be able to approach the upper RPMs. I think 118 to 120 will be your sweet spot with stock mufflers and airbox.

The cans are Laser, stock pipes fell apart years ago I think

I can do a get swap in about 30 mins, I’m getting good at this

And there is no place round here to do wot runs plus I don’t think my heart could take it, nor the 13 year old rear tyre

Report back then. Consider going up on the pilot jet (#40) too if you end up ordering jets. All the VFs like it, even completely stock, they were jetted lean on the idle circuit.

Well got home early from soccer, and managed to find some time

Whipped the carbs half off and popped in the 110 jets, well that’s fixed it

It now revs right up to the red line, feels a little flat as it goes through the 6k then takes off like a scolded cat

How the hell do you get to the balance screw between 4 and 3, I have a 90 degree adjustment driver, but just can’t find a way in there

    But it’s all good!

Still think if you change them to 40 pilots, 120 / 125 mains you will be dancing on the ceiling...

    Great news

Think I will just be happy in the fact that I have fixed it, for a while

I have more than enough of taking carbs to bits, the mrs moaning I stink of V-power, the carbs off the spare bike are in a state, but the diaphragms are like brand new, so I think I will swap those over changing the needles as I go, as I have not yet found reference as to what they should be and if I can even read what they are

I do think it vibrates quite a lot so that’s possibly a carb balance issue, but then I don’t have any experience of any other VF to compare too

Be good if another owner could give it a blast and let me know if it feels ok

fyi - you do not need V-Power - once in a while is fine, but its not like you need the octane boost. Before I winterise my bikes i put V-power in a week before and run it a bit to ensure thats the fuel in the system... Then away they go --- lol

    No ethanol for me thanks,

For the limited mileage the extra cost does not come into it

its not the cost - your bike was only designed for 91 octane. You just don't need to use it normally.

Great news! Yeah, take a break I suppose. But the sooner you dive back in, the easier it seems. :)

Check all your motor mount bolts and the bolt on the side of the exhaust collector that mounts to the motor.

Interesting, as the lowest octane in the UK is 95?

Standard unleaded is 95, V-Power is 98, and sometimes I take the Porsche to the local airfield and buy a gallon or two of avgas 102 octane, helps get the cobwebs out

And thats the reason you don't need 98...
The bike was designed for many markets - & so you can be confident it will run on almost anything... - don't try diesel though - lol

So forget all that nonsense, I have the sealey 110 bent carb tool, just can’t get near the adjuster between the front two carbs, is there some kind of trick to it?

I can get to the two rear balance adjusters easy enough,

But the front just defeats me

Another way is a pair of garden gloves & a stubby flat head screwdriver. But you do get burnt - lol..

Note: I also have the sealey 110. It sometimes has its uses but isn't as good as you might think HOWEVER there is an answer for you.

After failing with the Sealey I went and bought this.

    http://www.carbtune.co.uk/bevel.html

It made all the difference & I wish I'd bought it years ago. It's precise & the different heads make it easy to use. I normally use a different length on the front pair.

No longer burnt hands made it worth the cost.

    Me Again,

as it has not stopped raining for 4 days, I thought I would take a look at the brakes, for one thing they were not really awe inspiring even after a change of fluid which was 11% water

I had a quick look today before taking them to bits and having a very good inspection popping the pistons and a good clean, after having fluid like that in....

anyway they appear to have brand new pads and pins and other bits in, but the pads I think are Gold Fren, never heard of them! so my next question is are they crap, is that why the brakes do not feel brilliant, and if so what's the recommended

Always been a fan of Brembo brakes are they any good on these stainless steel disks
