Avoiding Dogs and other moving targets

If Fido can't run he becomes real predictable, the owner not so much. Would probably have to duck bullets everytime I come up the twisty road and into the back entrance of my neighborhood.

 

DeeBee glad you survived, could of been a lot worse like getting hit from an oncoming car or truck.
Expect the unexpected always, and I think it's a great idea to knock on there door and start off as concern about there dog, they will most likely get tripped up and say that he's ok which they just admitted of the insistent.

I wonder if those new plug wires could be the cause.

 

Perhaps the chicken vest is on the must buy list- I hate turkeys-they are the worst-don't know where they want to go!

No he had not. It's my first bike , it wasn't even road ready yet.
this incident occurred within my own subdivision when I went around "the loop" of my semi private neighborhood to verify that plugs and wires cured a misfire under load.

Rarely if ever seen a loose dog in the N-hood, let alone the area where it happened.
Fido had slipped across the street probably sniffing some hot tail, and was on his way back (no wonder he wasn't acting right).
the next day I see radio fence flags in the owners yarf, and still haven't seen a loose dog since.

Prior to the incident I did download a couple different rider training manuals , basically the same info you get with a rider course, with the exception of no group discussion, and it is up to me to practice various skills and maneuvers when safe to do so.

I have since got my bike legal and got my motorcycle provisional endorsement (learners). Still got a little longer to wait before I can take my full test. Can't remember when they are giving it

As unfortunate as it was, it taught me a very important lesson or three, as well as gave me a week or so to pour over the rider safety info , as well as finish going through the bike.

Lol not real sure it will pop a wheelie , I am however fairly sure it won't be long before I need to redo the clutch. HD springs ,plates and frictions (standard not Kevlar or whatever)

 

A stock VFR800 pops a wheelie no problem ... no special gearing or clutch stabs required ... you just need to know your power band.

 

Great advice. That way this dude could nail any errant Fido with the rear wheel.

 

In my MSF course they said when a dog is running at you from the side, you should speed up and slow down erratically, cause the dog has to stop and do some geometry before he knows which speed to go again. Dogs are bad at math you see. But in this instance it sounds like the dog was running at you from the front so maybe it wouldn't have helped.

DeeBee, you might try adding some more dBs to your bike, as in decibels. I haven't tried scaring away charging dogs yet but deer are easily spooked away by my revving engine (see vid below) and this was before I swapped out the stock exhaust for a Delkevic mini which is significantly louder. I can say that with the Delk installed I can now easily scare away humans too - I might go in search of a dog this afternoon to test it out - lol
