Having read a few posts about carrying ear plugs, I thought I would mention my solution.
Walgreens has a cheap pill box that works great for them. Cheap being 2 for $1.79.
About 1-1/2" square and 3/8" thick. Takes up very little room in any pocket.

I buy ear plugs in a pack of 10 and have a set in a pill box in every riding jacket I use.
Keeps them sanitary and I always have some with me.

    Don't always use them, though.

I keep several pairs in a prescription drug bottle in my tank bag, but I like your idea a lot.

I heard about one guy who ate his earplugs thinking it was two Tylenol. He survived.

    Buy these:

Amazon.com: Classic Ear Plugs, Pillow Paks, Uncorded, PVC Foam, Yellow, 200 Pairs/Box: Kitchen & Dining

Each pair comes in it's own little envelope. I get them from the AF since I am required to have hearing protection on my person while on duty. You can wear them once or twice & toss them. This box would last the average rider at least a year.

There is ZERO reason to buy custom fit plugs or anything like that. In every aviation safety magazine or report or investigation I've ever seen, all ear plugs kill the exact same amount of noise. These disposable foam plugs usually work BETTER than $75 custom fit ones.

    KC-10 FE out...

    Carrying extra ear plugs.

An Altoids tin works great for ear plugs. A larger one in the tank bag and smaller one for a couple in your pocket.

If I plug up my ears with all that stuff, how can I hear my talking GPS, somebody trying to sell me something over my cellphone, Oprah on my MP3, and the latest from Lady Gaga on my Blackberry and 15.5 laptop? IMO,earplugs can be very distracting.

BTW the disposables make great noseplugs when riding in dairy country.

I'm sorry, what was that? I am guilty of rarely using them except when riding two up with the old lady. "SLOW DOWN" Huh, got to speak up, it sounds like you're mumbling. I had a hearing test last year. Perfect score on the right and just less than perfect on the left. Stock exhaust and a quiet helmet...

I used to do that until the day I was in a hurry and stuffed a Gummy Bear in my ear by mistake. Still not sure if I got it all out. And the part I did remove tasted a little funny for some reason.

I went out and got a pair of those custom moulded jobs. Wasted money as far as I was concerned. Never wear them now. Besides, those foam plugs can also be stuffed in your nose when you ride through Chilliwack. I mean the cow shit, chicken droppings and rotting Brussels sprouts and all. I also wear them at the dinner table.

But seriously, the ear buds on my MP3 player works quite well at reducing most of the road noise. When I don't wear them, I do wear the foam ones which I agree with KC, are as good as those molded things. And if you don't wear protections of some sort, even though you don't notice problems now, that usually shows up later. Very similar to that other kind of protection. The damage shows up later.

But yea. There are an assortment of nifty little carrying cases out there to make it very easy to keep these cheap ear plugs clean, and at hand so there is no excuse not to wear them.

But I gotta ask Charles, do you carry these in your pocket or you purse?

I though you and I agreed we would not bring that up again? I had a bitch of a time passing those.

That's the kind of question I would expect from Badbilly.
Think about it for a minute.
No tank bag or tail bag, no luggage.
Where would I carry my purse?

One thing that I find strange is how many people have no idea how to use earplugs.
They don't bother to read the instructuions about compressing the foam and keep trying to stuff the ear plugs back in their ears.

And that's not even taking into account those that eat them or stuff them up their nose.

I do the same thing but keep it in my jacket pocket, along with a pair of unopened ones. I don't always bring my tank bag, but I always wear my jacket.

I THINK I always wear my jacket... I don't remember anymore.
