I use WD-40 to clean my chain and my chain is in great shape at 19k miles now. Yes, I know I know....it's time to change it. Getting ready to order chain and sprockets now. But - my point is that the WD-40 has been kind to the chain. ;D

I have a 95 VFR 750 with 35,000 miles on the clock. According to the maintenance history I got from the previous owner, the chain was replaced at 15,000 miles. (I'm guessing that the sprockets were not?)

Chain is in pretty good condition so is the rear sprocket (don't know about the front). Bike performs and accelerates well but my gut feeling is that the bike could benefit from a new chain and sprocket set.

What is the normal expected life of a chain and sprocket set ?

Is it better to stick with OEM or choose after market?

Both Honda and DID (almost guaranteed to be the oem chain) recommend replacement of the sprockets and chain at 12000 mile intervals. Go with a DID X-Ring or equivalent. It's slightly more expensive but I don't know a single person who has one that doesn't like it. They look better and last longer. That's reason enough for me to buy one. I plan on changing my chain to the DID x-ring right after I get new tires.

i picked up a new '02 about a yr ago. now has a little over 8k miles. i have been using 90 weight gear lube (per the owners manual) since day 1 every 500 miles (plus or minus). every now and then, i'll overlube the chain and wipe of the excess with a terrycloth rag. the side plate & rollers look brand spanking new....(did i say spank )
