The problem is cost, a study a few years ago indicated that the cost of industry, mainly manufacuturing, would inccur a great cost to convert all machinery to metric. And since industry is fighting it and the government at one time was converting over to meteric it was causing problems with cost for the government to find suppliers that would provide products and such in metric. As of about five years ago even the Gov't has given up and now does not process anything in metric.

I'm in the HVAC industry and when we did Gov't projects, put to about 5 years ago, you had to submit everyting in metric. Now they do no require it and in most cases make you submit in US standard.

If we were going to switch to meteric we should have done so back in the 50's or 60's.

The Untied Nations should vote on a new standard that pleases everyone, so we can all learn together, and in doing so, bring all of the world together in harmony. Kum-bah-yah......................NOT!

We use daylight savings as well. In fact when you recently adjusted, so did we...much to some peoples disagreement. Didn't bother me any. But some how Newfoundland came out 1/2 hour different.. That one has me puzzled.

As an American living in Canada for many years now - I still get confused with metric and imperial. Nice to have the answers on the Net - instead of having to write it all out by hand and converting... I'm just so happy I can press a button on the VFR and it will switch to miles and then back to kilometres when I'm traveling. Can it get any better than that?
Interesting....I've always wondered about the 1/2hour time difference in Newfoundland. Is anyone from Newfoundland out there who can answer that question?

I remember seeing something on TV about a city in the midwest USA that has three time zones in it. This is ONE city, and it seems to me it wasn't a very big city, either.

At least we all use the same time measurements, even if we aren't sure what time it is supposed to be.

Most of these functions are built right into the calculator in Windows 7. I'm not sure about earlier Windows calculators.

The one that always messes me up is converting barleycorns to furlongs.

Instead of ft/sec, for a while we were rating everything in furlongs/fortnight. That didn't go over very well.

That one is easy. The distance/time in that equation is directly proportional to the distance a Harley will travel in a week before having to go in to get fixed.

He actually said a "fur" piece. It's an old Southern joke that is very hard to explain.

Using mph in the US is one of the many differences that makes the US unique. I am sure there is more to the real story behind why US uses the mph conversion, just like how the US uses "Days Light Savings Time" and no other country does;ed hardy schuhe or the fact that english is the offical langauge of the US.

I personally don't see the problem. Anyways, what do you need speedomters for? Most you
