Sounds bad, But I will take dead over what this guy went threw. I don't wish this on any of us! Stay Safe! Stay alert! I don't do early morning and have been more cautious in dusk rides in the boonies and at lower speeds. It really doesn't matter what time you ride I guess. Critters are out there for us to avoid.

The message here is that Jeff had thousands of miles under his belt and all it took was once, hitting a critter. How long Jeff lay in the ditch is unknown. Some say what kept him from dying of hypothermia was Langlitz gear.

You're right. It doesn't matter what time when I see them standing in the middle of my neighborhood streets at noon. They don't have time pieces.

That was a sobering read - thanks for posting as I had never seen his story before. Very cool of Peter Fonda and others to have helped raise funds for Indian Jeff before he passed.

This is why I tend to ride around with my brights on maybe more than I should. I'm more worried about the critters in the road than annoying other drivers. No black cows in my neighborhood (not counting the overweight joggers - lol) but we have a lot of black bears - some of them are pretty damn big and I want to see them as far in advance as possible.

The poker run was +/- 60 miles for that part of the fund raiser. Scenic too we have a guy in our club who is movie scout so we had some stops on private property. We needed to supply Fonda with a bike. He requested a BMW R60 that being his first bike.

Having some say-so I nixed that and we got him a Harley to ride from a Seattle dealer. This got around to the harleydoods and probably added another couple of hundred bikes to the run. We also passed the plate at the Rest/BS stops. Gotta love those deep pocket harleydoods sometimes.

BTW.. Fonda worked his ass off for hours on this and other stuff..

I live right by a provincial park and travel a few stretches of highways that a notoriously bad for deer due to a no-hunting zone in the park (we're rural).

I've hit a deer once in the car ... not good.

Ride safe. I usuly have my hi-beams on if traffic permits.

Since wolves are mostly gone in the lower 48, the deer populations are huge. Lots of hunting laws have been and are being changes to let hunters take more. Some populations have a really bad winter due to near starving.

We had a really bad year of winter kill a few years ago. They actually reduced bag limits the past few years. Population is recovering though.

Yeah a bad winter and over population leads to a mass kill off in the winter. Especially harsh ones in the great white north.

The worst scenario is when there's a dump of snow, a melt, and an immediate freeze with more snow.

The deer and other animals have a difficult time getting to food on the ground.

I imagine snow is not nearly as bad as melted snow that becomes ice.

Worst when thawed by a Chinook wind and freezes on the asphalt while moving creating genuine black ice.

Gotta be batshit crazy to ride in those conditions anyway IMO. Scarce roadkill being among some of the reasons.

I learned about black ice a long time ago on a spring ski trip in Colorado. Coming down from a mountain pass going very slow hit some black ice. It was like slow motion terror. I resisted the the giant urge to try and hit the brakes and I pointed at some nice white snow where I regained traction and continued on to town where I bought some new underwear. I heard the pass was closed for many hours that day due to a wreck. Hosier pass from Fairplay to Breckenridge.

If the light is right you can see that shit, but sometimes its invisible. I learned to look where it might be.........

I was camping in Glacier National Montana with my family one summer, we left our campsite early to travel to another area in the park. I was only going 30 mph as the road was through heavy forest the was very close to the road. A huge female mule deer jumped out and over the hood of the car just missing the wind shield. I looked back at my kids and their eyes were huge!
