It's hard to not want to help her out. That said, I would have done the same for any of you guys.

I suspect a lot of dudes here would like to watch her six.

On the subject of oil spills, cars and trucks leak. Not a great idea riding in the center of a lane where all that leaked oil accumulates. That's where the harleydoods ride and around my hood especially on the two laners and PCH it's mostly Harleys that meet the road, rubber side up and sideways.

K&N??? Nooooo! A guy over at the other place had same problem as AM and did NOT use the nut to tighten/install, so he swears. Exact same place in filter failed on him as well as others.

Also, I was curious. Did the oil light come on for AM when her filter failed? I know she said she caught it early by seeing it in rear view mirrors, luckily. I know she said she had 1/2 qt left when it made it to the shop. I would like to know and hope the light would have come on for low oil pressure but never recall this being mentioned.

Looking back, I crack up...really that day I was already rolling with laffs at the ridiculous situation. Angels indeed. Still shocked I didn't go down.

Good question gigemVFR...yes the oil light did come on. I don't recall when, but I recall seeing it. It happened so incredibly fast...from the first sign of smoke until I pulled over...few seconds.

I feel that nut is a major weak point on that filter whether people torque it or not...doesn't seem like smart engineering. Too much room for problems having another point where pressure could potentially wreak havoc. People can install and remove other filters just fine.

With the amount of issues people have had just here on the forum, there have to be thousands more. Think K&N would have gotten it together by now to make a smart redesign.

I have seen K&N oil filter fail threads on 3 different forums. I would like to hear what the K&N rep has to say about the failures. In the 4 emails I had with them they did not address the problem.

Sorry - my bad ... Fram has a variety of manufacturers make their filters.

Hi-Flo Filtro makes most of their motorcycle filters to K&N's specs. That said, Hi-Flo is actually a fairly decent brand ... I've used them myself. Difference being is that they don't put that silly nut on their filters.

    Here's a cool article from CalSci: http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/FilterStudy.html

It's a little dated now, and suppliers could have changed for companies like K&N that don't make their own filters.

Just curious, has anything that Knight posted here been wrong? Seems like the oil post is pretty much what everyone else is saying.
I don't run a gen8 but poured full synth into my gen6 this fall and took it for a ride to the gas station which is some 3 miles away to top it up for winter storage. No issue there and I suppose it was semi synth in it since that's what Honda sells. It'll be interesting this spring :).

BTW, I overfilled it slightly, being some mm (what's that, 1/25th of an inch :)) above the max, will that be an issue so I should drain a bit of oil or will it be fine?
(I see this as a very marginal ThreadJacker 2000(tm) since it is a thread about oil changes at least)

Many site have the schematics. Rocky Mountain ATV is one. Here's the link to the oil filter schematic: https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/oem-schematic/4

Welcome to "oil change from hell." On my last trip I had to go to the Honda dealer in Pensacola to get an oil change, since I was still 3000 miles from home. I just did the next oil change myself, as usual, and had a nasty experience. The oil filter had been screwed on so tightly that I had to remove all the left side fairing pieces to get enough force on it. I've done maybe 40-50 oil changes myself and never seen the o-ring completely flattened, ground into the engine case. All told I had to undo 47 different bolts, pins (A's and B's), tabs, grommets and snaps! That was a lesson, by golly. From now on my trips will not exceed an oil change distance.

I certainly tried that, but it just ripped - couldn't get enough leverage. With all the left fairings off I could get the channel locks in to a better grip and finally crushed and loosened the filter. Ugh, it wasn't a pretty job.
