Welllll......it is looking like a VTR1000 Superhawk if I can get the guy to play ball. HE KNOWS WHAT HE HAS and it is really just a POS missing a bunch of parts....I can wait.

That is an exhaust valve out of a VTR1000F. I was riding my buddy's to a bike night and on the way home it started backfiring and popping a but. Then it got real bad about 2 miles from my house. It was shooting 4 foot flames out the exhaust and I had to keep it at about 4 grand at stoplights to keep it from dying. We had a brief look at each other... he shrugged his shoulders as if saying, "if you can get it home...". I did.

He was choosing between a brand new 98 VTR and a 98 VFR at our dealership. He regrets his decision to this day. He wanted something more exciting... well he got it. He has bad luck with many things, the Super Hawks are great bikes too.

It was very fun to ride. I was throttling up nice wheelies that night. The big advertising line was, "Pistons bigger than a P51 Mustang!"

Don't get me started on the Super Hawk. I absolutely loved mine. I put 25k on mine in 3 years. I had a sick set of Yosh pipes and that was it. It ran perfect. I only sold it to pay for my race program at the time. I should have kept it. :(
I got complements on it everywhere I went. It sounded very Duc. lol

Been a while since posting, the 500 has been sitting for a while and not been ridden.I love it but it is really cold blooded, I have to warm it up for a while before it runs right, But that is not why I am posting. Disaster has struck and the gas tank stated leaking. Thar f-ing REDKOTE strikes again. As previously chronicled I covered over the REDKOTE with Caswell's epoxy and it worked fine. But I recently got a drip out of the tank and it is RED gas. The REDKOTE never completely cured and it is still ruining my world. So.....I went all in with the Caswell's again and put a fresh coat on top of the now 2 year old coat. I cleaned the crap out of the tank with acetone first then poured in the Caswell's. No idea if this hail mary will work. I will find out in 24 hours.

I also did some investigation on why the valves are ticking so much. Not any different than when I got it running but still annoying, I pulled out the inlet adjustment screws and they look pretty suspect. I think I am going to buy a new set and readjust. This engine is a 1985 model, and was wondering what the correct lash setting should be. The book says .004Int/,005Ex, but the 1986 says .006 for both. what is the right answer?

Oh no... I figured no news was good news. I have a physical reaction just to hearing the words "Red Kote" from reading your chronicled experiences.

I've been setting my exhaust lash to 0.006. The vast majority of valves I've ever checked have tended towards tight. I can't say that's the right move vs. 0.005", but it's worked for me so far.

I changed my adjustment screws in 2021 out of an abundance of caution. I didn't notice any difference. Be very very careful not to accidently drop those things into the engine if you do them, or it'll be a frustrating day at the office.
