Chatted with Anne Marie about an hour ago. She was at the Manitoba / Saskatchewan border - she had a bit of a delay in Riding Mountain National Park and may not make it to Saskatoon tonight.

I called a campground that was closer for her. I'd expect we'll be hearing from her in about another hour or two. :)

Also ... figures ... the sun just came out here. :(

Foam Lake is where I managed to find her camping with WiFi. She's having a lot of problems getting her cellular to work ... I think most Canadians have the same problem in that area. ;)

I had a similar "Speeding" ticket experience in Radium Hot Springs, which is in a National Park. The "Ranger" dude had pulled me over and written the ticket, when the guy I was riding with asked him how he got our speed. He replied that he "estimated" it while passing me. He than asked him how fast I was going. We got attitude from that point, and he said over 90 km/h! Needless to say I sent in my intention to dispute the ticket, and they replied by letting me know it was not needed. Ticket cancelled! The Park Ranger guys/gals, are authorized to give out traffic tickets, though, clearly, they have no business doing so.

Hopefully the weather and Cellular Service will be better in Alberta? At the beginning of the week they predicted 80-100% chance of rain over the "Memorial Day" weekend (a nod to you Americans). Now, 30% chance of a shower! A lot better.

AM will be passing through through Edmonton in the next day or two I suspect.

Regarding the ticket - we didn't end up getting one. He was Provincial Park Ranger and he's got no jurisdiction. :)

Might be different for Federal Park Rangers though?

In BC, the Park Rangers are Special Provincial Constables and can issue tickets for certain things under authority of certain acts. As far as traffic goes, they can issue a traffic ticket on any road that is in the park, but terminates there. If the road runs through, they cannot.

National Park Rangers do have the authority to write tickets, arrest for impaired driving and the like. Estimation of speed is one method of obtaining evidence. However, for that evidence to be accepted by the JP takes considerable credible evidence. I have issued a few tickets that way, and successfully convicted a disputant once that I remember. But! Of my 25 years in the mounties, a clear 1/3 of that was spent in traffic services which was primarily Traffic Accident Investigation and much more so, traffic law enforcement. Mostly speed.

It is amazing how accurate you become in estimating speed in a very short period of time. I would sit and watch traffic, estimate speed, and then throw the beam out there to see how well I did. Over a relative short period of tome, you develop expertise. My court evidence was that I was capable of estimating speeds at +- 10 kmh. In reality, it was +-5 kmh.

Here in BC, the actual speed you are doing only matters when the officer is alleging high speed for higher penalties. The basic speeding, he just has to satisfy the court the violator was exceeding the speed limit, even by 1 kmh. Speeding is absolute liability. The moment you exceed the limit, no matter how much or what the reason, the offense has been committed.

Oh my!! So much rain!! The night here started good for clear skies and stars, but a thick cloud cover rolled in pretty fast. I hope it's just cloud cover and not rain!

I can't wait to meet you and your family tomorrow!!!! I'm going to try to make it, but I have to first make up time I lost today. I should be in your area around 8 p.m. I will call you when I'm close or if I have delays

A few pics from today follows.

I left Birds Hill at 7:30 am to get to Riding Mountain around 10 (packing up in rain took longer than expected).

Well, traffic, gas, rain gear changes, and about an hour talking to people wondering about my journey took up more time and I arrived at 12:30. I thought an awesome plan would give me about an hour and a half to explore the park. Then I would be able to get to Saskatoon by 8 p.m.

Next, rain, wind, wildlife, and about an hour recouping my bearings after an incident in Riding Mountain, took a ton of time.

So I'm east of there in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan. It's beautiful, clouds rolled in. Milky Way and Northern Lights are still hiding.

    Some highlights from today:
    Hands down #1, the peoples!
    Getting across MB to SK
    Scenery
    Sun coming out in SK
    Seeing tons of moose
Avoiding accident and not dropping bike in mud
Awesome camp Jeff found at Foam Lake
    Being excited for 3G service.

    Not so hawt:
    Seeing tons of moose
Having to avoid an accident while riding uphill in mud.
8 hours of 44-52 degree temps in rain and wind.

As usual, my positives are longer. :) even the not so hawt can be good. For example, I cracked myself up today all day long. Especially each time I'd see a moose. Every time like a little kid I'd exclaim, "Holy fuck, THAT'S a moose!!!" Every time it got me like that.

No matter how things go, I smile so big when I think that at least it's happening in Canada!!!! <3

Sorry the pics messed up. Service isn't that great here and I'm not sure how duplicates got stuck in.
