Did you look under the seat to see if there's a manufacturer's informational sticker with the Honda paint code on it? There's supposed to be a paint color code sticker somewhere on the bike, and it's under the seat on my 5th Gen bikes.

It's a respray. The paint code under the seat is R157 which is Italian red. I also found a chip in the paint under the seat and you can see the red underneath. I'm actually okay with it. They did a really good job on the respray and I kind of dig the yellow.

Fluids are in... Fair shape. I'm going to replace them all. For peace of mind if nothing else. The battery is charging up to 13.8 volts under load. I think that is within spec, but I've got to look at the service manual to be sure.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't expect to be inheriting someone else's problems. Fortunately this is all pretty easy to fix so far.

I'll start griping when I get to the point where I discover the trans is shot...

Also looks like the left fork seal is leaking. Gotta love a good challenge...

EDIT: Think I'm going to try cleaning out the fork seals. I bought a seal mate. It will be here Wednesday. For 7 bucks I'll see ifI can save myself some grief!

Double check the seal and the oil cooler. A member on VFRDiscussion reported that the fork seal leak he had was not the fork seal at all but the oil cooler leaking and spraying on the fork!

Thanks OOTV, I'll add it to the list. Hopefully I'm not adding an oil cooler to the parts I'm having to buy!

I see I need a special tool (Pin spanner?) to adjust the chain but looking for the correct tool seems to be a bit of a challenge. Can anyone recommend the correct one? I see a lot of different types out there and don't want to waste time and money buying the wrong one.

EDIT - Nevermind... I found it.

After reconditioning my 5th set of forks in 4 years - all different bikes, I've yet to find the seal mate to work longer than a few weeks.
Once that oil has found a path it will want to follow it..
Have another 2 pairs to do in the next few weeks but thats for another thread lol..
If you are at the point of stripping the forks (& it seems you are) then as you need Fork Oil & Fork Seals you may as well get new springs set for your weight, & bushes.. They are 16 years old after all...

Then depending on the condition of the lowers you may want to paint them - LOLOLOL

Sorry forgot to mention while the forks are off it's a great time to look at the front brakes - you did say you were changing the brake fluid after all...take the pads out, pop the pistons out and give them a good clean and 2500 grit w&d - if required - you will be amazed at the difference it makes..

Obviously deep clean the lower & upper tree, both sides of the mudguard, check the head bearings for notchiness then refit everything.
That's the weekend now covered... ✌️✌️

Have you removed the seat and looked for the color code on the frame?

Finally got to pull the fairings and dig into it today.
    • The fairings are legit Honda parts. That's good news.
    • All of the wiring checked out fine. (Nothing burned or melting) Also good news.
    • The Air box is missing the snorkel and the Air filter has been replaced with a K&N.
    • It's got a K&N Oil filter.
    • I pulled the open exhaust and replaced with a set of stock mufflers. it's amazing how much better it starts and runs.
    • I need to figure out where the 02 sensor is so I can see if it's been deleted.
    • I adjusted the idle speed down from 1500 to 1200
    • Antifreeze looks clean and is reddish pink. Does that sound right? I can't remember...
My new chain breaker/rivet tool will be here tomorrow so next up is the chain replacement and fluids refresh.
New snorkel and Air filter have been ordered.

All good things, except... Because your bike is a Cali-specific model you might want to research the idle speed setting. I don't know if the 6th Gen is the same as the 5th Gen, but on the Cali-version 5th Gens the spec idle speed is 1,300 RPM + or - 100 RPM (while the 49-state 5th Gen idle speed is 1,200 RPM + or - 100 RPM).

Almost forgot, you mention that the bike has a K&N oil filter on it. Do something about that.

Huh... I wonder why to 100 RPM Difference? Just doesn't seem like enough to make much of a difference. I have a copy of the owners manual that I found and it says 1200 (+/- 100) but I think I have the UK version of the manual, so there wouldn't be any Cali information in it.

Yes, I already have a New Purolator filter on deck and will be changing the oil along with a brake a clutch fluids this weekend. The good news is the filter looks fairly new.

Found a 2005 US manual which should be close enough. It calls for 1200 RPM's on the idle. Nothing specific to CA models.
