guess I'm a little baffled by their lead-in statement and how it relates to the article.

But when your job is to sell papers....

Anyway, what better time than the beginning of winter to kick off a helmet thread?

helmets, seat belts, speed limits. honestly i say we get rid of all of them, warning labels too. we could do with some gene pool thinning.

I saw the original article. Thought it was interesting - disagree with the bit about current helmet designs doing more harm than good. Even in a slow speed - short fall event, the skull, while one of the strongest bones in the body, is still relatively fragile. Yes you can get a concussion while wearing a helmet, but that's better than a depressed or open skull fracture :der: - which would be the likely result of an unprotected impact with the road surface or another object. I think the concepts of this new design have promise, and I look forward to further testing. Sometimes I kinda agree with Zedicus - but the required use increases sales, which increases the R&D $ spent by the manufacturers.

On another note following the same gene pool discussion, I ran across a U-tube video which involved a major network investigation of a "serious safety" problem with a vehicle - you can shift from park to any gear without applying the brake. This just burns me..... :mad2: Older auto tranny cars and trucks and manual transmission cars and trucks never required an interlock. It was just the recommended safe practice to apply the brakes when shifting it from park and then apply the parking brake after placing the vehicle in park or shutting it off & placing it in gear.

Well some woman left her mini van running to check the mail and her 4 year old tried to hop out and grabbed the shifter and the lady grabbed the steering wheel and ended up pinned between the car and her house (with a severely injured leg) - how is that the car company's fault? She should have shut off the damn vehicle (or at least applied the parking brake) when exiting the vehicle - especially when she had young kids in it. :loco: It is impossible to idiot proof every mechanical device in the world :der: Had to vent  - sorry about the hijack tink. :focus: :pop2:

Any time I go faster than I would a pedal bicycle. So, not the four blocks through the neighborhood to the corner store.

My R90 BMW and I were involved in a serious altercation with a drunk driver less than two blocks from the house. I was wearing my helmet, jacket boots but had neglected to put on my gloves. It tore huge holes in both my hands. My wife still talks about the time I cleaned all those rocks out on my hands and the rags of skin hanging off. I got nice arm and led hematomas too. I am a believer in protective gear.

Hmmmm. I often reach 80km/h (50MPH) on a 'pedal bicycle'.

Next week I'll be working (BMW, not VFR) at a major bicycle race, expecting to reach 115km/h just to keep up with them.

Honestly, I don't care what others wear, or don't wear... Just play safe by your own standards, accept the pain and injury if it happens, don't hurt other people and enjoy the ride.

No comment here, but I did just finish reading Robert Heinlans book "Starship Troopers". Wish they would have done the movie like the book. Damn it was a good read.

Right - keyword being how fast "I" would pedal a bike.

There aren't enough performance enhancing drugs available for me to get a bicycle over 20mph.

Enjoy the bike event. We have a fair number of those here in Colorado and occasionally get the call for motorcycles to help out.
