Welcome to the site, '01 is a great bike.

Speedo/odo accuracy: this bike, like a lot, has the speedo 6-10% high while the odo reads spot on. The speedo healer can adjust the speedo to be accurate, but your odo will then be off, they have the same countershaft input. Why the mfg's do this I don't know but it's baked in to the ECU software, one input, two calculations & outputs. The speedo healer can only adjust the signal from the countershaft, affecting both readings.

Inner cover, $11, #10 in the diagram? http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Honda/Motorcycle/1999/VFR800FI+AC/UPPER+COWL/parts.html

I hit 90K on my '99 recently, they'll go forever.

Most speedometers are designed to comply with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Regulation 39. In a nutshell the indicated speed must never be less than the actual speed, and the indicated speed must not be more than 110 percent of the true speed plus 4 km/h.

The standard also dictates ambient temperature, recommended tire pressures, new tires and design people and luggage load.

Consequently they manufacture the speedo to deliberately read fast, on average 5% fast. This was all conceived before the prolific availability of GPS navigation and iPhone apps to determine your actual speed.

Fixing cracked fairings and molding missing parts. Get some Plastex www.plastex.net

The rear tail piece and side panels on this bike had large splits, all fixed with Plastex before being sprayed and 2 years later still holding strong.
