Regardless of what bike I would get, I'd ride the crap out of it. I don't buy garage queens.

    Mofo,
You don't like switching back and forth, or having an "extra" bike in your garage?

    Garage queen lol

I'm with you on that one, bikes are for riding, not polishing and preening over!

    How about one of these?

    ariel_twee_2.jpg ariel-ace-bespoke-motorcycle-15.jpg kkx4qg4q5llrn031jvjg.jpg

An Ariel Ace, built to your own specification somewhere in a big shed in the depths of England...

    That's the 1200 V4 from a VFR12 squeezed in there, with a claimed 174hp output.

    I confess I'm cheating slightly, that'd be more like £20k than $20k...

Only if I could keep my 800 though!!!

If I had $20,000 I might have a restored Triumph T160 Trident and by restored I mean fixed. These bikes are and were fantastic to ride but the build quality sucked. There is nothing quite like a T150 or T160 when they are right. They are smooth running three cylinder bikes with lots of torque just off idle. They are not light but carry the weight down low. They will swing in and out of corners effortlessly and have a wonderful growling exhaust note.

I would add a large touring bike like a Goldwing or a Voyager.

I second the Diavel, although sometimes my practical side makes me waver towards the Multi.

It's so fugly it's cool! But I'd just do what I did this summer, a new 2013 VFR1200F at a stonkin good price, and a bunch of fix up for it- and if I had enough left over, and could find one at the right price, an RC51... there's a pretty good used 2002 with about 20K miles near me... some good mods, including an Ohlins shock- now if only my hips and wrists could handle it! :smile-new:

A dual sport (transalp, BMW 650) or maybe even a NC700x (not really an off-roader, I know) and another 4th gen. In South African money I would still have another 100k left.

    Interesting:
Most people selected an European bike (Ducati most of us)
Next bike was Honda (lot of VFR'S) which means we are happy with our bikes...mostly :)

Very few selected a cruiser (only2-4) or a big touring bike (about 3)

But nobody wanted for example Suzuki GSX 750 or 1000, Kawasaki, Yamaha R1, or Honda RR ?? Very interesting....

    Thank you

I second this. At the end of the day, when we hop on our bikes and hit the road, we have far more power and performance than we need, even in the VFR800. The RC30, while not up to snuff compared to say an s100rr, has waaaayyyyyy more oomph than any of us needs. What really matters is a sense of affection for the bike, it's style, its context for you personally. For those of us who just love the je ne se quois of the VFR, the RC30 is the apex.

Right, I picked a used 1098 for fun and a used 1200GS for the sketchy highways, BUT I am keeping my VFR. It is the smoothest motorcycle I have ever ridden and I can pile up miles on it.
