Very Cool site with one exception. "Educate the drivers" Naaa, fuck em. Saw one vid that in LA the fines could be as much as 1500 pesos USD. Most of us had to pay for an education one way or t'other and that looks like a great way to learn some arithmetic.

There is that side of it. Sure is a shitload more of the types that park in those slots without the permits and use the permits of those who are legit. I hope the woman who has this horrible condition hasn't passed it on to her child or someone else down the line.

Well IMO the problem with imposing extreme fines is that it will ironically lead to abuse of the enforcement. Can you just see the city saying, "We're running low on funds, let's find some handicapped spots and fine 'em!" There was a similar issue with red light cameras, at least in my area. They would give out red light tickets even if you were in the red for a tiny fraction of a second and led to the abuse of the system. It got so bad that legislation required that at those intersections with red light cameras to add an extra second or so to the yellow light. And well, big surprise the city stopped using the red light cameras after revenue went down.

I like the idea of at least teaching the abusers the consequences of their actions and even see case studies of actual disabled people struggling to find a parking spot. I would hope that would at least help them realize we're not just trying to make money off them but instead trying to educate them and help them realize that abusing the handicapped spots isn't just a minor issue.

How bout a compromise on this one? Fine the assholes a few hundred pesos then educate them. As an alternative, educate the assholes then the next time the fine is doubled. My two cents and their 3K pesos really starts to add up. The dinero could be used for all sorts of good things. I could use a few pesos mself to go into my "I want a Ferrari" fund..;)

I agree. Something should be done aboot all those handicapped folks running red lights. What they should do is do what the bikers did down under. They wore helmets thus disproving big brother's claims that the bikes were actually being ridden by the nefarious alleged miscreants.

Old handicapped folks should have to wear helmets anyway IMO, especially old harleydoods.

Red light cameras take two photos and show movement. They get you, you are wrong 99.9% of the time. But fight them. That's what the courts are for. If you win, Good on you. Buy me a beer when I come through.

I have never supported the concept of speed cameras but am whole heartedly for the traffic light cameras. The vast majority of our collisions take place at intersections because someone is racing through to beat the red light. And often someone quick off the start on the green. We, on bikes, tend to loose that battle.

The camera will take two pix. Both from the rear. And only if there is movement in the sensor area at the time the light is red. So it will show the violator moving, in a turn lane, signalling, braking and what the traffic light is doing. Even if it does show you in the intersection at the tail end of the sequence, one of the photos will tell you how far you traveled in that time. Then the photos are viewed by someone to decide if to process the charge or not. I don't know if that is a clerk or a cop. This is where lack of discretion may surface. Not unlike the discretion used by a salesperson when deciding if they are going to give you a discount on your purchase for whatever reason.

BTW. In most jurisdictions, you are required to stop for a yellow light unless it is unsafe, or complete the move you began, and clear the intersection. That is abused to no end. But we are getting off topic a bit. Back to the unconscious bastards who shamelessly use these spots where there is no need, understanding one's disabilities may not be readily noticeable and we need to exercise caution. Such as maybe an asthmatic person
