2000 vfr800 - Battery drained after hot rides. Battery holds trickle;e charge. Reg/Rec has been changed out.

Battery 12v - stays 12v at idle - drops to 10v to 6v with RPM.

Test at the 2 wire harnesses between Stat and Reg/Reg? Plug with the 3 yellow wires? Just output test or resistance too?

Since I'll probably be there soon....

Tips for removing Stat cover if it hangs on after removing bolts?
Drain pan - will I lose oil when removing Stat cover?
Possible to do without removing coolant hoses near cover?
Does the Stat wire stay on the left side of the bike or do I have to fish it through the V?

    Thanks to all,

    Gman in San Diego

If you google Electrosport you can download their fault finding guide. https://www.electrosport.com/pages/technical-resources

I've not done this on a VFR but did so on a FSC600 scooter. With the engine running you can check the AC voltage across any two yellow wires and you should get something over 50V on all combinations. Then you can test the continuity to ground of any yellow wire (should be none) and the resistance of any two yellow wires which should be 4-6 Ohms. If these all check out then your alternator is OK, the problem is likely to be the RR.

I have had the alternator cover off my 1986 VFR750 and that wasn't too hard at all; the oil level in the sump will be below the case, but there will be a little residual oil in the cover. Just remember that the permanent magnets will want to keep the case on the engine so be prepared to pull against that.

I know the alternator connector is on the left side of the bike so doubt that the cable runs through the V. If it does and you need to replace it, tie some string to the connector when you pull it back, then tie the new connector to the string to pull it through the V

if the AC voltages are correct there is NO NEED to remove the alternator cover.

Unplug the stator and examine the wires and connector for damage/corrosion. It is the three pronged white plug with three yellow wires.

Check for continuity from one leg to another (3 checks). They should have .1-.4 (under 1.0, others have said).

Check for continuity to ground from each (3 checks). They should not have any.

Start the bike. You may need good battery for this.

Check for VAC (not DC) across the three wires (3 checks) at ~5k rpm. It should be 40-55ish VAC.

This will tell you about Stator health. Then move on to R/R.

I'll add check the connections to the starter relay are not melted/corroded. Stator wires stay to the left side...... not in the V at all.

Oh No Sir..maybe a typo error!
YES, you should have continuity between phases, one leg to another, 0.1 to 1.0 ohms

You are correct. Typo! I'll see if I can change the original. Mine always seem to be .3 ohms.

Hey Bmart, what is it ya smokin???
You've corrected the wrong line. NO there should be infinity resistance of the three yellow phase wires to Ground.
