Buying anything used I check everything, especially tire dates. If its not near new I buy new tires immediately. Worth the piece of mind, there is enough to deal with on the roads these days.

hmm It looks like you have tread visible on sides and centre - a classic sign of extended running the tyre whilst seriously under inflated. The following link may give you a better feel for when you need to replace your tyres.

Meantime more frequent monitoring of your tyre pressures may be worthwhile.

Pressure wasn’t the issue, I never fluctuated more than 2-3lbs between checks. It all had to do with a 16yr old tire.

Just because it’s rare doesn’t mean it’s not possible.

It was a lie of ommission by the dealer perhaps.
    Those tires are new!
    In 2002.

Thank you! That is my point. I shouldn’t have trusted the dealer. It might have been new. (New to bike).

This takes the cake. The tire would have been visibly worn out 1500 miles ago, when the bike was bought. I don't think I would ride in your car with you...

Thanks for your tire expertise. If ever needed I will be sure to recommend you as an expert for any trials involving tires.

Here’s another one for the experts.

Checked pressures this weekend, inspected tires, ordered new rear which I knew was needed 2 weeks ago. You see the center of tire failing? That wasn’t there 25 miles ago when I headed to work. It’s a tire from 2006, 12 years old. I did get 5000 miles out of it.

You're most welcome. You asked and received with that kind of post. Good luck.

If that was a new tire on a 1k track bikle I'd say it looked like cold tearing. 12 year old tire?! Your playing Russian roulette.

I don't think that is tire failure in the photo. That may be just the point immediately before the tire threads start to show.

I understand your intent on the original post to speak out against the dealer who claimed they were new tires, but hell man, stop riding that bike until the rubber is changed. You may be capable of controlling your bike with a sudden tire failure but the shit head coming at you in the other direction may not possess the pizzaz to deal with what he/she may see when you do.

She's got new rubber front and rear. Front obviously a few weeks ago, rear yesterday.

    Can we separate two things.

    (1) It sounds like the seller was not totally honest - and you have good grounds to go back and complain. Do it!

    (2) If nothing else this has hopefully brought home to you (and possibly others) the importance of regular pre-ride checks.

Going forward from here I have a feeling you WILL be checking your bike more frequently - as being able to "blame the seller" wont help much if you end up in hospital.

    Agreed on both.

The thread unfortunately fell into I'm an inept rider who never checks anything, which is false. Should I have been more diligent than every 2 weeks with pressures, sure, but it wasn't like I ignored it as portrayed by some comments. I've had 3 instant flat rears at 70-80mph from road trash, trust me I check my tires every other day for punctures, shrapnel, etc. Tire pressure was bi-weekly, it's now weekly but that wouldn't have changed my experience.

If any lesson comes from this thread it should be DO NOT TRUST OLD TIRES. They will not wear in a manner you're accustomed.

I'll leave it at that with no further comments...

That is the best line of this thread. I'm even suspect on relatively new tires on a used bike I have bought as I don't know their history. Crazy thing go through my mind when I buy a new bike, like did the previous owner park where the bike got hammered by sun on one side of the bike for years, did the tire degrade faster on the side exposed to the sun. lol

the pic is too much a close up - that tyre was worn out much more than 25 miles ago - even if the cold tears didn't show then. The tread looks like lots of sitting on a straight line & in the centre has worn out a while ago. Our tyres in europe have wear markers built into the tread - I think set at 1.6mm. You are a light year away from having that on that front tyre. I guess it doesn't rain much where you are...

I believe that is built in to all street legal tires now. When I use to run the Pilot Power 3 tires, I knew I was near the indicators, as that's when the tire started to feel a bit "greasy". A visual confirmation showed, it was pretty much time to change them.

    Said I wouldn’t comment but...

We get a fair amount of rain, El Niño, but I can’t speak for this bike. Purchased only last April. My CBR is my rain bike, this is my sunny bike and since it’s only rained a couple times, none of which experienced on this bike.

It really is a lesson of reading tire dates more than anything. I was naive, trusting the dealer. Every other bike I’ve had was new.

How old of a tire can you be safe to put on a bike? I need to check the dates on my T30evos that I was planning to put on the bike next month. I bought them a year or so ago and they more than likely where manufactured a year or two before. Let me know boys! Thanks
