The lights in Australia must be pretty sensitive because I've never had problems at the lights. I've also been told that the lack of iron in our bikes makes it near impossible to get a speed reading on a radar gun,..and that's why the Government is pushing for front number plates.

The magnet wouldn't stick to the bottom of the oil pan without the tape because the oil pan is aluminum. It would stick to the centerstand when it is up. I figure the tape is just a extra measure of adhesion.

I don't think it's the lack of steel that makes it difficult for the radar guns, rather it is the small frontal area.

Doh! Your absolutely correct. The oil pan won't work but either of the exhaust pipes from the front cylinders is definitely steel and a magnet sticks very well.

Neodymium magnets will lose their magnetic properties if heated above 175° F (80° C).

I think placing them on your pipes isnt such a great idea.

Then sticking them on the oil pan won't work either, unless the tape will work to insulate them from the heat a bit.

aside from the whole "too hot" detail. Your not going to get much contact area on the header since its ROUND.

Mine was stuck to the bottom of the lowest fairing. Double sided tape.

There is only a very small amount of accuracy to this. Radar is less reflective on plastic and even less on fiberglass but there is more than enough reflectivity to plastic for radar to work. Careful.

Here in the UK there's a thing called "Type Approval" - the government has tested and approved the specific radar guns, laser systems and cameras for use on trucks, vans, cars, but suspiciously never motorcycles! That doesn't stop them zapping you tho, particularly with the camera vans. These things are especially good at what's called "slippage" where the laser marker runs along the length of the bike rather than lingering on the very small front profile, which means they're likely to record speeds approaching 60-70mph when travelling at legal speeds in 30 limits. An instant ban.
Despite the lack of type approval, I can't recall any headline press of riders having convictions overturned.

So where would one buy these magnets besides online? Would they be at say a home depot, or radio shack?

I've got about a dozen of the quarter size magnets. I just put four of them on the bottom side of my exhaust collector, lowest part of my bike. I thought about the heat and have no idea what it may do. Guess I'm going to find out this coming week. I have a light one mile from me that I have to run when nobody else is around to trip it. I looked at the center stand and it's round tubing so the magnet won't really stay for long I suspect.

The only worry I have is picking up metal road trash with those strong magnets. I got mine at a craft store called Pat Catans. Any good craft store should have them also check Jo Ann fabrics. They have stuff like that.

I wonder if you could stick on so many to pick up manhole covers? What's scrap iron going for these days?

Your absolutely right about the heat. Last night I took one of the magnets and heated it with a propane torch. It lost all of it's magnetism. So I took them off the collector and put them on the frame rails. Thanks for the heads up. I'll get to try them this week at the light I have trouble at. It's going in to the high 50's low 60's.

    Hmmm

So I finally got around to giving this a try today. I bought a rare earth magnet locally and attatched it to the centerstand. Being how the centerstand on a 6th gen is entirely made of round tubing, I used a few wraps of electrical tape for extra insurance against it coming off over a rough patch in the road. :ninja:

I then rode over to my local problem light that has never tripped once for any of the 3 motorcycles that I have owned, but trips for my Buick every time in 2-3 seconds.

After trying all of the aforementioned tips (sitting on the lines, reving the motor etc.), I had to make a right turn out of the left turn lane and flip a U-turn just like normal. I was there for a solid 3 mins. trying different positions with no luck. :frown:

I don't doubt that the magnet idea would work on a light that is only slightly out of adjustment, but this particular one seems to be too far out of spec. I will give the Berrien County road comission a call and see if they can help me out on this issue.

Thanks anyhow for the creative ideas guys!

wow I purchased two of them online, yet to try them. Those dam things are so strong I don't think I will need anything to keep them on just something to keep them from crap getting all over them.
