Has anyone here removed and/or replaced components of or their complete transmission? I went over the maintenance manual last night, and it seemed to have me do a bunch of unnecessary stuff, like remove the cylinder heards, etc. It looks like I could do this with the engine in the frame, but I'd like any tips and tricks before I attempt this. Thanks!

No way you're going to do anything other than messing with the shifting assembly without removing the motor. Even then to do any serious work like replacing gears you need to split the cases. Replacing shift forks is somewhat do-able but you still need the motor out to turn it upside down. Twice now I found it way more practical to just swap in another motor.

Thanks for the info, even if it was what I didn't want to hear...bummer. Well it looks like I'll be having to do the big bore kit install before I leave Europe...
