Did you see the photo of Robert Randolph? I believe he qualifies Billy. His slide work is pretty good. Though I think Hendrix was pretty good, especially in his time I think the thing that impresses me the most about him was that he played a right handed strung guitar, upside down and left handed. I play (not be ry well and just for myself) I tried to make a few simple cords the way he played and it is insane that he could play like that. There is another guy now in modern times that plays left and upside down. Doyle Bramhall jr. He is very good and has played for many years for Clapton and Roger Waters along with his own band Arc Angels. He is a white dude.

Would ya go for "mostly" white dudes? ; Steel guitar is played with a bar. Slide players use all sort of things.
Had a run of some blues tuned windchimes years back. My partner on that is a guitarist. Plays studio, synphony and can do a Jimi Hendrix too, We made the chimes from titanium alloy tubing we got from Boeing surplus. We cut him one for his slide.

The upsidedown players are probably self taught.

Never was a big fan of Hendrix.. He did a shitload of Chuck Berry licks including the "dancing" Chuck Berry when he played at concerts (Newport) was as good as it gets. Theres a concern in UK by Glen Campbell when he was at his peak. Another self taught dude.

Left out were a shitload of jazz players. Who will now be mentioned by the peanut gallery with an indignant overtone.

I hope nobody asks me who my "favorite" (anything) is. What we need is maybe a new category called "unfavorite" when we get sucked into some bogus shit and finally figure oot it's bad juju.

The name "Robert Cray" keeps screaming in my head as a fantastic black musician. Now that I typed it out for you I will be okay.

Never heard of him either! LOL

The name of the game here is to dig oot or up some one hit wonder who played in an obscure group that was trying to get Beatle famous by naming themselves like one I saw today in a thrift store for 25 centavos. "Quasimodo and the Bell Ringers."

What is missing here IMO is any mention of jazz players or those players who all they have to say is show me the chart and they make magic. Bucky and John Pizzarelli for starters or dudes who just can say hum a few bars and they nail it never having any formal training. Case in point, Glenn Campbell about age 18..doing Studio work in Hollywood.

My fave group of the month is "Sowbug and the Shemales".

Elvis, live at Madison Square Garden, "Polk Salad Annie."

His road orchestra was the most solid moving train. One does not have to be an Elvis fan to appreciate it.

Now, "Hey Baby" by Ted Nugent. Guitarists can tell it was written by Derek St. Holmes, as most Nugent coined songs have a certain pattern to them that this interesting nugget diverges from.
