    other options

i usually take mine along with me, however there are times when that is logistically a 'pain in the ass'- like when we go to the bike racing.

I have the ventura packrack system on my bike so i simply pop it into
the pack and zip it away, securing the tabs with a small padlock.
heres a pic of the system on my VTR 1000. plenty of room to swallow a helmet in there. Plus you can zip bag 2 to the other side of this one for all your other gear or another helmet, if your 2 up. BTW you can store bag 1 inside bag 2 if this is the case and deploy both once on site. My mate has the bigger 'bag 2'
    on his 999.

If you need to use the on bike helmet lock option then use the Arai helmet cover you get with the helmet, while its on the bike. This will help to reduce its visibility, especially if its a racer rep edition with lots of attractive graphics.
(actually i use my KBC cover on my arai for extra deception)

in both these cases im practicing the 'out of sight, out of mind' principle as part of a risk reduction strategy. not fool proof tho,but does provide some cover.

lastly, a little forward planning. if your going on a ride where you know your gonna stop and you dont wanna take your helmet wandering, then get your self a spare.
i have an arai (my fav) and a KBC. both fit me well, with the latter worth half the arai. i also use it on some longer trips to reduce wear & tear on my Arai. and have it set up with a clear screen for night rides or days when irridium isnt appropriate. i just grab which ever suits conditions.

    food for thought..

I rarely secure my helmet to the bike, but I do live in the midwest. :) If I'm traveling I'll try to park the bike where I can watch it and leave the helmet, if I can't see it I'll take my helmet with me mostly. A lot just depends on the vibes I get when I stop. I've left it unsecured at lots of touristy places and have never had a helmet stolen anywhere. Last couple of helmets have been the Schuberth flip-up, maybe they aren't that desirable. :)

For ultimate protection, Pac-safe makes a helmet bag that has a wire net inside the lining so that it can't be cut out with a knife. But the biggest thing to remember is:

Locks keep honest people honest; and a thief can walk off with your lid indoors if your not paying attention.

I take mine with me 90% of the time. But occasionally leave it on the bike if I can see it from where I'm at.

Take it with me. Just throw it in a small day pack.

With me 90% of the time, the other 10% locked in top box or side box....

Have seen platy of people leaving them on the tank or seat whill talkin to there mates on a sunday run and when the wind blows helmets on the grown (my eyes FU@KED) It is like this you take care of it and one day if you need it, it will do the same for you.......

Thats just my point of view

    Helmet security

I recently purchased a t shaped metal item that slips thru the d-ring on the helmet and the other end slips over the helmet lock on your bike. It makes this process so much easier. I bought 2 for $6.00. if you need a pic let me know.

Probably 90-95% of the time I take my helmet with me. Occasionally I will put it in the Ventura bag if there is enough room.
