    6th gen... Just my opinion.

The 5th gen does have gear driven cams and is a good bike but The 6th is newer, and already has some of the mods you will eventually want. If you don't want the bags, sell them to someone on the site and put the money toward more gadgets.

Don't worry about the mileage. Just make sure you perform maint (which is what you have to do on any vehicle) and you'll do well. The ABS is nice and you get a remote for the rear shock. I have 32k miles on my bike and another one of your Canadian brethren has over 50k miles on his

    More Opinion time:
For either bike you choose, things you should do and or think about. If the shocks are stock you should look at upgrading because the stock shock is not rebuildable and is all but shot at 15k miles. They range in price from $600-1200, springs for your forks run $100-140. You will also want to look at your tires, chain and sprockets. These things all are necessary maint.

    Tires are $200-$300 a set
Chain and sprocket kits are about $210
    Oil and filter $30

All DIY stuff even the forks and shock

well tires are new, as well as chain and sprocket , plan on changing oil and filter before riding season.

it's pretty close. if the mods are ones you like, then probably so. I think they are pretty close in comparison as far as riding, performace, etc. If yone looks or feels better to you, then get it. The 6th gen does cost a bit more for the valve service. They are both FI, they both have linked brakes. You cannot get ABS on the 5th so if you really like ABS, you have to go with the 6th. The 5th gen was not produced in anywhere near the numbers of the 6th so if parts availability is a major concern, you might lean more towards 6th, but if being more unique sounds like you then the 5th is definitely seen a lot less than the 6th nowadays. I think the 6th weighs a bit more, too because of dual pipes and maybe some other emissions stuff, but you'll hardly notice that riding.

Yes it was a joke, but I believe some refer to the 2000-2001 model as the 5.5. I read this in the manual or a VFR wiki (I think).

I think its cause of the changes to the 5th relating to pollution gear etc.

I think Tink is building the first true 5.5 :)
